Scoring in each of its eight opportunities at the plate, Indian (7-9) posted multiple runs in five of those frames. After Kentucky (14-4) scored the first four runs in the opening frame, Indiana built an 8-4 lead with four in the first, one in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth. The Wildcats plated three runs in the fifth, but IU would plate the last 12 runs of the game to account for the final margin.
All nine starters recorded hits in the game, as Indiana pounded out 23 hits, walked eight times and reached on hit-by-pitch twice. Of the 23 hits, nine were doubles and six were home runs. The nine doubles are the most in a game since at least 2005 and the six home runs are the most in a single game since hitting nine at Maryland during the 2019 campaign.
Individually, junior Hunter Jessee and redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis each hit two home runs in the game and ended with three-hit nights. Redshirt-sophomore Morgan Colopy and freshman Carter Mathison both hit home runs, as well. Graduate student Tyler Doanes was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, one RBI and two walks. Senior Phillip Glasser had three hits – all doubles – scored twice and drove in two RBIs.
Ellis paced the team with four RBIs and he joined Doanes, Jessee and redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen with three runs scored apiece.
Freshman Luke Hayden tossed one inning in the start and didn't factor into the decision, but fellow rookies Ryan Kraft and Grant Holderfield carried the bulk of the game to hold UK's offense at bay.
Kraft (1-0) entered in the second inning and tossed the next 3 2/3 innings with three runs allowed on three hits to earn his first career win. He struck out five and walked two batters, before handing the ball to Nathan Stahl for two-thirds of an inning. Holderfield (1) threw the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed just one base runner and struck out eight to collect his first career save.
For Kentucky, starting pitcher Seth Logue (1-1) took the loss with seven runs allowed on seven hits. In all, UK collected 10 hits and walked five times, led by Daniel Harris IV with a 2-for-4 game and three RBIs. Alonzo Rubalcaba also drove in three runs in the game.
