NOTES: Hoosiers, Gaels Meet in NCAA Second Round

Indiana University is in its 122nd season of competition in men's basketball and will play Saint Mary's in the Second Round in the NCAA East Regional. This year marks the 40th NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hoosiers and first since 2016. IU is a 12 seed, while the Gaels are the 5 seed. The winner will play either UCLA or Akron on Saturday. The Hoosiers last met the Gaels in 1957 with the Hoosiers taking a 79-66 decision in Bloomington. IU is 12-4 all-time against the West Coast Conference, with the last meeting coming in 2008 in the first game ever at Lucas Oil Stadium when Gonzaga beat the Hoosiers, 70-54. IU defeated Wyoming, 66-58, in the First Four to advance to Thursday's game.

FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT GAME FOR ALL
On its roster, IU has 647 combined starts among the group, but Tuesday night against Wyoming marked the first time any current IU appeared an NCAA Tournament Game. However, Sr./Jr. Race Thompson, Jr./So. Trayce Jackson-Davis, Sr./Jr. Rob Phinisee, Jr./So. Nathan Childress, and Jr./So. Michael Shipp were part of a 2020 squad that likely would have earned an NCAA berth had it not been for the COVID-19 cancelation of the event.
DEFENSE LEADS THE HOOSIERS
The Hoosiers are the top-rated defense in the Big Ten according to KenPom (18th, nationally). IU is first in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense (39.1%) and first in conference games only (41.3%). They are second in blocked shots (4.97). In the Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers held Illinois to 35.7% shooting and won its first game in nine tries when it trailed with 5:00 minutes to go (57-54). The Illini did not make a field goal in the final five minutes. Against Michigan, from the 12:52 mark until 1:42 remaining, the Wolverines did not make a field goal. In that time, Indiana went on a 28-6 run.
COACH MIKE WOODSON
IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Indiana native Mike Woodson is the first Hoosier graduate to lead the program at the start of the season since Lou Watson in 1965. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks) back to his alma mater and worked for seven franchises as an assistant coach and won an NBA title in 2004 with the Detroit Pistons. He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in program history with 2,061 points.
Saint Mary's Coach Randy Bennett is in his 21st year with the Gaels.
MIKE WOODSON AND ONE OF HIS MENTORS
IU Coach Mike Woodson and his mentor, Larry Brown, are the only head coaches in NCAA history to begin their head coaching career in the NBA and earn an NCAA berth in their first year as a collegiate head coach. Brown did so at Kansas in 1983. Woodson was on Brown's staff in Philadelphia and was his defensive coordinator with the Pistons when they won the NBA title.

This will be the second trip for the Hoosiers to Portland in the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, IU played in the first two rounds of the South Regional defeating New Mexico State, 79-66, and VCU, 63-61, in the Moda Center. IU's Will Sheehey hit a 12-footer with 12 seconds left to rally the Hoosiers from nine down late in the game.
