BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their regional awards for the 2021-22 indoor track & field season. Associate Head Coach Ed Beathea of Indiana Track & Field was named the Men's Assistant Head Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes Region.
"Ed can certainly take pride in his work with Rikkoi Brathwaite as he developed into one of the top 60 meter runners in the world," said Head Coach Ron Helmer. "Rikkoi's progress has been steady and consistent and has taken him to performances no other Big Ten sprinter has seen in that event. They have worked well together, and we are excited about moving into the outdoor events and the impact they can have there."
Beathea receives this honor after coaching sprint Rikkoi Brathwaite to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past weekend. Brathwaite went 6.52 for a Big Ten, school, and personal record.
At the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, Brathwaite was crowned the champion of the 60m. Beathea's group accounted for 14 points that went towards the men's team score.
Also at conference championships, he coached Kenny Benton to the finals of the 400m and 200m. Benton took seventh and eighth in those events, respectively. Benton is also No. 3 in the 200m and No. 4 in the 400m in school history. He owns a time of 21.14 in the 200m and 46.64 in the 400m.
Antonio Laidler also made his way into the record book, clocking a time of 21.31 in 200m at the Music City Invitational which is good for No. 8 at IU history.
Beathea's squad and the rest of the Hoosiers track & field team open the indoor season next week at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State. The meet is set to start on Thursday, March 24 and wrap up on Saturday, March 25.
