
Hoosiers Cruise in NCAA Opener Over Charlotte

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – 3-seed Indiana posted its largest NCAA Tournament win in school history as it trounced 14-seed Charlotte, 85-51, in the first round on Saturday inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

- Indiana (23-8) got out to a 7-3 lead early but after the 49ers tied the game at 11-all, Indiana opened the game up on a 9-0 run which featured five points from Moore-McNeil on a triple and a fast-break opportunity.
- It helped the IU take a 22-12 lead at the end of the first, including a Berger jumper to beat the clock as time expired on the frame.
- The Hoosiers run extended mid-way through the second as they gained separation on a 22-2 run, taking its largest lead in the half of 20 on three separate occasions including a Gulbe 3-pointer, who had eight points in the second quarter, with three minutes to play.
- IU would take the 42-24 lead at the break behind double figure efforts from Berger (12) and Gulbe (11).
- Shooting lights out in the second half, the Hoosiers went 58.8 and 62.5 percent in the final 20 minutes to outscored the 49ers, 43-27.
- Junior forward Mackenzie Holmes paced her squad in the second half with 15-points to lead IU in the win with 19 total along with eight rebounds.

- With Saturday's victory the Hoosiers move on to the second round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.
- When the game was tied at 11-11, the Hoosiers used a 22-2 run in the first and second quarter to take the lead and never looked back.
- Indiana's largest lead of the contest came in the third quarter where the Hoosiers jumped out to a 31-point lead, 64-33.
- Junior Mackenzie Holmes led the way in scoring with 19 points. She also had a team-leading eight rebounds with two assists.
- Senior Grace Berger saw a double-digit scoring effort with 18. Berger grabbed six rebounds and four assists.
- Senior Aleksa Gulbe put up 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals against the 49ers.
- Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored 11 points with seven boards and two assists. Freshman Kaitlin Peterson saw her first career game action in the NCAA tournament on Saturday afternoon. She tallied two points in five minutes of action.
- Freshman forward Mona Zaric scored her first career bucket in an Indiana uniform.
- The 85 points scored by the Hoosiers is the second-most in a tournament game in school history (87 vs. Kentucky, 1983).
- IU's 23 assists set a team NCAA program record while eight steals tied the current record.
- Shooting 54.7 percent on the afternoon, Indiana recorded its second-best field goal percentage in a tournament game in its history.
- Indiana recorded 37 boards compared to Charlotte's 32.
