Baseball Takes Game One Over Xavier on Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Xavier on Sunday (March 20th) at Bart Kaufman Field. The Hoosiers opened the day with a 13-3 victory, before the Musketeers grabbed a 13-3 win in the nightcap.
In game one, the two teams traded single runs early, before Indiana (8-12) scored four in the second, two in the third and four in the fourth inning to stake to an 11-1 lead. Xavier (8-13) got two back in the fifth inning, before IU would tack on one run in the sixth and seventh innings to cap the scoring in game one.
It was defense and pitching that helped IU to a game one victory, as three Hoosier pitchers combined to strike out seven and walk only two batters. The defense turned three double plays early in the game to help the offense take control early.
Senior Bradley Brehmer (2-1) worked seven innings and allowed three runs on nine hits to earn the win. He struck out six and walked just one batter in his second quality start of the season. Redshirt-sophomore David Platt and freshman Luke Hayden each struck out one in scoreless innings of relief to close out the victory.
At the plate, eight of nine starters collected hits and all nine reached base in the game, led by a 3-for-4 effort at the plate by senior Phillip Glasser. Glasser scored twice, scored one and drew one walk in the first game of the day. Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen was 2-for-2 with one walk and one hit-by-pitch. Whalen hit his first career home run and drove in three RBIs in the game. Graduate student Tyler Doanes reached base three times, stole two bases and scored three runs.
Game two followed a different trajectory as Xavier took a 7-0 lead through three and a half innings. IU plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth, but a five-run top of the fifth was the difference maker for the Musketeers. Xavier added one run in the ninth inning to cap the 13-7 contest.
Freshman Carter Mathison hit his fifth home run of the season – and second of the day – and ended the game with three RBIs and one run scored. Tibbitts added two more RBIs and two runs scored, while freshman Josh Pyne and Glasser each chipped in two hits.
For Xavier, Andrew Walker was 3-for-3 in game one and Jared Cushing drove in both Musketeer RBIs in the opening game. Lane Flamm tossed four innings and allowed three runs on two hits to earn the win in game two, while Jack Housinger drove in four RBIs and scored three runs to pace the XU offense.
