Capobianco Silver Highlights Hoosier Rise in Day Two
3/24/2022 9:29:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving
ATLANTA – Two-time national champion and Indiana redshirt senior Andrew Capobianco earned his first-ever NCAA medal on the 1-meter springboard to highlight Indiana's three top-eight finishes on the second day of the 2022 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday (March 24) inside McAuley Aquatic Center.
Capobianco and freshman Quinn Henninger each earned first team All-America honors on the 1-meter, while IU's 200 Freestyle Relay dropped time to place eighth in the final event of the evening. The Hoosiers moved up from 11th to eighth place in the team standings with 78 points after two days in Atlanta.
A year after missing the national meet due to a back injury, fifth-year senior Bruno Blaskovic helped the Hoosiers score important points on Thursday. In the morning session, Blaskovic was one of nine athletes to swim a sub-19.00 50 Freestyle, earning the top seed in the consolation final. He placed 13th Thursday night, then swam the opening leg of IU's 200 Freestyle Relay. Blaskovic earned the 10th and 11th All-America honors of his career Thursday.
IU's final three swimmers, senior Van Mathias, freshman Rafael Miroslaw and senior Jack Franzman, in order, all posted splits under 19 seconds to improve upon their seed time from 1:15.81 to 1:15.47, just six one-hundredths of a second short of the program record.
"I'm really proud of the team today," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "For Bruno, coming back from such a terrible injury over the last year-and-a-half, to see him swim an [18-second 50 free] and to lead us into the top eight in that relay, I couldn't be happier for him. Our two divers were just outstanding. And I'm proud of the relay to get us into top eight. Now we have to keep climbing the ladder one rung at a time. We have good days coming up, and we need to capitalize."
Capobianco scored north of 70 on four of his six dives for a 420.25 score, his fourth NCAA medal and eighth All-America honor. The redshirt senior now has a medal in all three diving events.
In the first NCAA championship event of his career, Henninger finished sixth with a 378.80. The freshman was the only underclassman in the championship final. Indiana has had an All-American in the 1M in five straight seasons and nine of the last 10 championships.
"The Hoosier divers had a great start to the men's championships," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "Andrew didn't miss a dive all day. His consistency was as good as I have ever seen out of him. And Quinn showed great composure throughout the day as the lone freshman in the A final."
