ATLANTA – No. 4-ranked Indiana will have two top-seeded A final swims in the Friday (March 25) evening session of the 2022 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships inside McAuley Aquatic Center.
Following results from Friday's preliminary session, IU will have six final swims as well as Andrew Capobianco's defense of the 3-meter diving title, which he's won at the last two championships.
Junior Brendan Burns lived up to his top seed in the 100 Backstroke coming into the week, swimming a 44.36 in Friday morning's prelim to claim the No. 1 seed in the championship final. Burns hovered around his personal best and the program record 44.31 that won him gold at the Big Ten Championships in February.
IU is also the top-ranked relay in the 400 medley, set to close the evening. The Hoosiers come in with a 3:00.95 seed time that marks the best time in program history and won the Big Ten title.
Earlier in the morning, Burns set a personal best time and went under 45 seconds in the 100 Butterfly, putting up a 44.81 for the third-fastest time in program history. Burns missed the A final by just three-hundredths of a second and will be the top seed in the consolation final after beating his initial seed by 16 spots (previously 25).
Sophomore Tomer Frankel also had a career-best swim in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 44.38 and just one-hundredth of a second short of the program record. Frankel beat his seed by four spots to take the No. 4 seed in the championship final.
Freshman Rafael Miroslaw represented IU in the 200 free, earning a spot in the consolation final after touching the wall in 1:32.11. Miroslaw earned his first-career individual All-America honor and will race as the No. 2 seed Friday night.
Senior Gabriel Fantoni swam faster than his seed (45.05) and just a hundredth short of his personal best in the 100 back prelim and will enter as the No. 2 seed in the consolation final.
In the 3-meter prelim, Capobianco placed fifth among the championship final qualifiers scoring 407.75 with four dives north of 80. Capobianco won last year's 3M title with a 505.20 and the 2022 Big Ten Championship with a 467.75.
Freshmen Carson Tyler (365.70) and Quinn Henninger (356.05) just missed B final qualification, placing 18th and 20th, respectively. After being marked for an incomplete dive on his first attempt of the dive, Henninger nearly willed his way into the consolation round with just five scoring dives and posted dives better than 80 points on his final two attempts.
