ATLANTA – All seven of Indiana's finalists finished top 10 and pushed the Hoosiers into the top five of the team standings on day three of the 2022 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday (March 25) inside McAuley Aquatic Center.
Indiana won three silver medals on Friday night, earning one apiece in individual swimming, diving and relay. It all added up to 105 points on the day to propel the Hoosiers into fifth place on the team leaderboard with a 183 three-day total.
"I don't know if I've ever been prouder of a group of men than what I watched today," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "There was so much fight and perseverance, coming back from stuff that is really rough to have happen to you. This group is fighting with every bit of energy and effort. I know tomorrow is going to be a good day. We're performing well, we just need to put it all together."
Junior Brendan Burns set the tone for the night by winning the B final of the 100 Butterfly with a career-best 44.54 while earning maximum points from the race. Sophomore Tomer Frankel followed with a 44.56 in the championships to place fifth.
Next, freshman Rafael Miroslaw was out-touched by just three-tenths of a second in the 200 Freestyle consolation final, but Miroslaw stayed true to his seed to finish 10th in the event at 1:32.27.
Burns returned for the 100 Backstroke championship final, where he came in as the top-seeded qualifier in the heat. The junior pushed to a career-best and program record 44.54, almost three tenths better than his prelim swim, but NC State's Kacper Stokowski just reached in a tenth faster to steal the title.
In the 100 back B heat, senior Gabriel Fantoni also dropped time, going 44.70 for a seed-matching 10th-place swim. Fantoni touched the wall in 44.92 during the prelim, missing his personal best by one hundredth of a second, but knocked down the wall in his second effort.
After scoring a 34.20 in the fourth round of the 3-meter dive, reigning two-time champion Andrew Capobianco recovered with an 88.40 in dive five and a 98.80 for his final attempt to put himself back into contention for the win. The final diver of the night, Texas A&M's Kurtis Mathews, hurdled Capobianco with a 91.20, and Capobianco settled for his second silver medal of the meet by a gap just under five points.
"The Hoosier divers experienced a lot of highs and a lot of lows today," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "In the end I would say it was a good day. Andrew did five of the best dives in the contest and one dive that kept him just off the top spot."
Earlier in the day, freshmen Caron Tyler and Quinn Henninger just missed making a final, placing 18th and 20th, respectively. After being marked for an incomplete dive on his first attempt of the event, Henninger nearly willed his way into the consolation round with just five scoring dives and posted dives better than 80 points on his final two attempts.
"Quinn and Carson had flashes of brilliance today and are gaining the experience they will hopefully rely on tomorrow and need in the years to come," Johansen said.
In the final event of the evening, Indiana's 400 Medley Relay won the top-seeded heat with a 3:00.76. The team of Burns, freshman Josh Matheny, Frankel and Miroslaw took second to the only other relay swimming under 3:01, California, who, in the previous heat, swam 3:00.36.
