Ellis homers in game one, Doanes gets four hits with three runs and three RBIs over two games versus Purple Aces
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In two nail-biting finishes, the Indiana baseball program came out on top in both games of a doubleheader against Evansville on Sunday (March 27). Identical scores of 6-5 gave the Hoosiers the series win, but the two games could not have been scripted differently.
In the first game, Indiana (10-13) scored four runs in the first inning and two in the fourth inning to build a 6-0 lead. Hoosier pitching held Evansville (9-14) hitless through six innings, but the Aces scored five runs in the eighth inning to close the gap to 6-5.
The second game was decided by the same score, but in a much different fashion. Evansville led 1-0 after one inning and 2-1 after two frames, before four straight runs for Indiana pushed the home team in front, 5-2. A run in the sixth and two in the seventh for the Purple Aces knotted things at five runs a piece, before senior Phillip Glasser delivered the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Bradley Brehmer (3-1) posted his second straight quality start to earn the win in game one. The right-hander allowed one hit over six scoreless innings of work. He walked four and struck out five. Freshman Grant Holderfield came on in a one-run game in the eighth and recorded the final three outs of the game to pick up his second save of the season.
At the plate in the first game, redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen posted IU's lone multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort, one run scored and one RBI. Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis hit his 11th home run of the season and collected two RBIs in the opening game of the twinbill. Junior Hunter Jessee reached base twice with a double and a walk and added one RBI. Graduate student Tyler Doanes drove in the other IU RBI.
The game two offense was led by Doanes, Glasser and freshman Carter Mathison. The top two hitters in the order went 5-for-7 with two runs scored and three RBIs, led by a 3-for-3 game by Doanes. He added two RBIs and scored twice in the game, as well. Glasser had a pair of hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. A pair of walks led to a pair of runs scored for Mathison on the night.
Four and two-thirds innings of one-run relief from freshman Ryan Kraft enabled the offense to build its lead, while senior Braydon Tucker (1-2) escaped a bases loaded jam in the seventh and tossed the final 2 1/3 innings scoreless to earn the win. Kraft posted five strikeouts, while Tucker fanned four to account for nine of the 11 strikeouts for the Hoosiers pitching staff.
For Evansville, Tanner Craig and Evan Berkey led the way in game one with each of them hitting a home run. Craig had two hits and drove in two RBIs, while Berkey plated three runs and added two walks in the game. The second game saw three Purple Ace batters collect three hits, as Mark Shallenberger, Simon Sherry and Brent Widder each posted three hits. Schallenberger scored two runs and drove in two RBIs to pace the offense.
