BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's swimming and diving closed out another great season with a top-five finish at the 2022 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday (March 26), its third top-five placement at the national meet in the last four full seasons.
It was Indiana's 17th top-five finish all-time and its eighth top-10 placement in the last 10 championships. With 265 points, IU was also the highest finisher from the Big Ten, scoring 100 more points than ninth-place Ohio State.
On the final night, junior Brendan Burns became the first Hoosier since 1973 to capture a national championship in the 200-Yard Butterfly. IU has had a national champion in four straight championships, with 10 in that span between individual swimming, diving and relays.

Burns set two program records during the week. The junior raced to a 44.15 in the 100 back, the 10th-fastest time in U.S. history, and a 1:38.71 for his 200 fly title, the fifth-fastest time ever by an American. On the same night of the 100 back record, Burns led off Indiana's 400 Medley Relay that posted a 3:00.76 for a silver medal. Freshman Josh Matheny, sophomore Tomer Frankel and freshman Rafael Miroslaw, in order, raced the final 300 yards of the relay.
Thirteen Hoosiers combined for 38 All-America honors at the national meet, with Frankel and Miroslaw leading the group at six apiece. Burns and senior Bruno Blaskovic each had five. Frankel, Miroslaw, Matheny and freshmen divers Quinn Henninger and Carson Tyler totaled 17 All-Americas between IU's underclassmen.
Miroslaw tallied the most individual points, 11, of the underclass group and contributed to four of IU's six scoring relays. In the 100 Freestyle prelim, the Hamburg, Germany, native tied the fourth-fastest time by a freshman in NCAA history, touching in 41.63.
Diving contributed 64 points to Indiana's 265-point total, with its trio of senior Andrew Capobianco and freshmen Quinn Henninger and Carson Tyler totaling three All-America honors. Capobianco had another great showing at the national meet, winning silver in each of the springboard events and ninth in Platform diving.
The Hoosiers started in 11th after the first night, featuring a pair of relays, and steadily worked up the leaderboard during the week. Even on their least busy day, day two, the Hoosiers jumped up to eighth place on Thursday. Earning three silver medals on Friday, IU entered the top-five and then held its position on the final day.
