SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – An early lead wasn't enough for the Indiana baseball program against a potent Missouri State lineup in a 9-7 loss in the series opener at Hammons Field on Friday (March 4) afternoon.
Indiana (2-6) scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead, but Missouri State (5-3) scored seven times in the fifth to take the lead. Solo home runs from the Hoosiers in the seventh and eighth innings knotted the score at seven, before the Bears used a two-run blast in the eighth to retake the lead.
At the plate, a trio of freshmen led the way for IU, paced by Josh Pyne's two-hit game. Pyne was the lone Hoosier with multiple hits in the game and he drove in a pair of RBIs. Carter Mathison hit his first career home run in the eighth inning to tie the game and scored three runs on the night. Brock Tibbitts doubled and came in the score one run.
Redshirt-sophomore Morgan Colopy hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning, walked once and scored twice.
Junior John-Biagio Modugno got the start and allowed five runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out one in a no decision. Redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp (0-2) took the loss with four runs allowed in 2 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out five and walked four.
For Missouri State, Dakota Kotowski and Mason Greer each hit home runs with runners on base, while Mason Hull added the third multi-RBI game for the Bears. Kotowski had two RBIs, while Greer led all hitters with three runs batted in. Trey Ziegenbein (2-1) picked up the win with two innings of one-run relief work.
