SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – For the third straight day, the Indiana baseball program got a good showing from the offense and senior Bradley Brehmer held the Missouri State offense at bay in a 10-4 victory on Sunday (March 6) at Hammons Field.
The victory gave Indiana (4-6) its first series victory of the season, as IU jumped out to an early 9-0 lead after three innings. Missouri State (5-6) scored two in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Hoosiers added the 10th run of the game with a single run in the sixth.
Five Hoosiers posted multi-hit games and seven of the nine starters collected hits in the contest. Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis posted his second straight multi-RBI game with a game-high three RBIs on a 2-for-4 day at the plate. The trio of graduate student Tyler Doanes, senior Phillip Glasser and redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen each posted two hits in the game and scored two runs.
Freshman Carter Mathison logged his second multi-RBI game of the season and scored twice in a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Mathison hit his second home run of the weekend to cap a six-run first inning. Freshman Brock Tibbitts produced the third multi-RBI game of the day with a pair of RBIs to go along with one base hit and one walk.
In his first start for the Cream and Crimson, Bradley Brehmer (1-0) delivered the second straight quality start for the pitching staff. The right-hander tossed six inning and allowed three runs on four hits to earn his first win in an IU uniform. Freshman Ryan Kraft allowed one run in one inning of work and senior Braydon Tucker finished the game with two scoreless frames.
Missouri State starting pitcher Dan Merrill (1-2) allowed six runs on four hits in just one inning of work. The Bear offense was led by Mason Greer's two-hit day. Four different MSU hitters drove in RBIs, with Mason Hull hitting a solo home run to highlight the offense.
