In the first game, Indiana (12-18, 2-4 B1G) fell behind 2-0 early, but scored three in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth inning to build a 7-2 lead. A two-run home run in the eighth inning capped the scoring for IU. After a two-run first inning, Purdue (21-7, 3-4 B1G) added just one more in the sixth.
In the third-highest scoring game in the history of the rivalry – and the 14th game in the series to see each team score double-digit runs – the teams combined for 31 runs on 37 hits. Purdue got to 16 runs with three in the first, six in the third, three in the fourth and four in the sixth. Indiana posted its 15 runs with three in the first, two in the fourth, four in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the ninth.
Game one belonged to the bottom three in the IU order, who posted seven of the team's nine hits, scored five runs and drove in six of the eight runs, with five RBIs off the bat of sophomore Samuel Murrison in the opening game. The right-handed hitter started the game with his first career home run and produced a career-high five RBIs. It was the first multi-RBI game of his career and accompanied a career-high three hits. Freshman Brock Tibbitts was on base twice, including his eighth home run of the season. Junior Hunter Jessee was on base in all five plate appearances with two hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch.
Senior starting pitcher Bradley Brehmer allowed two unearned runs over 4 1/3 innings, before freshman Grant Holderfield came on in relief with the bases loaded in the fifth and escaped the jam. Brehmer finished with seven hits allowed, two walks and six strikeouts in the no decision.
Holderfield (2-1) picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen. He allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out two. Senior Braydon Tucker (2) picked up his second save of the season with three innings of work to close things out. Tucker allowed just two singles and struck out two in the outing.
Five Boilermakers posted two-hit games in the first game of the series, as Curtis Washington Jr. reached base three times with two hits, one walk and one run scored. Starting pitcher Troy Wansing (2-1) took the loss with six runs allowed on four hits over 3 1/3 innings.
In game two, eight of nine Indiana batters collected multiple hits in the game, led by three-hit games from Phillip Glasser, Josh Pyne and Jessee. Pyne also drove in four RBIs to lead the Hoosiers. Glasser, Jessee, Murrison and Pyne all homered in the game and Matthew Ellis posted the only other extra base hit with a double.
