Hoosiers hit three home runs at Cincinnati in midweek win
After Cincinnati (16-19) struck first with a solo home run in the first inning, Indiana (14-22) scored the next four runs, all coming via the home run. A two-run shot in the second inning gave IU the lead and two solo home runs in the fourth expanded it. The Bearcats got one run back in the eighth, before IU tacked on three runs in the ninth. A two-run UC home run in the bottom of the ninth accounted for the final margin.
The home run powered the offense for Indiana, as the Hoosiers hit three home runs on the afternoon. Freshmen Carter Mathison and Brock Tibbitts left the yard and graduate student Tyler Doanes added the other long ball. It was the third home run of the season for Doanes. For Mathison and Tibbitts, they hit their ninth and eighth home runs, respectively, to rank No. 1 and 2 among all Big Ten freshmen in that category.
Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen drove in a game-high three runs, while Doanes, Mathison and Tibbitts each plated a pair of RBIs in the game. Doanes, Tibbitts and junior Hunter Jessee each produced two-hits game for IU and freshman Max Johnson walked three times and scored one run in his collegiate debut, as he started at shortstop in his first college appearance.
Freshman Josh Pyne continued to reach base with a single and a walk to move his reached base streak to 26 games. The streak started on March 8 and is the longest by a freshman in program history. It ranks No. 5 overall by a Hoosier hitter since 2005.
In his first collegiate start on the mound, freshman Grant Holderfield tossed two innings and allowed one run on three hits. Freshman Luke Hayden (3-0) picked up the win in relief with four scoreless innings of work. The right-hander allowed one hit, walked three and struck out two. Freshman Ryan Kraft allowed one run over 1 2/3 innings of work. Redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and finished with two runs allowed on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work to close out the game.
For Cincinnati, Ryan Nicholson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored and Jake Hansen added a two-hit game. Nicholson and Griffin Merritt each homered for UC. Carter Earls (0-1) took the loss with two runs allowed on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of work.
