BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A five-run second inning and a quality start on the mound paved the way to a series-clinching win for the Indiana baseball program on Saturday (April 23) over Nebraska, 8-1, at Bart Kaufman Stadium.
Indiana (16-22, 4-7 B1G) scored five unearned runs in the second inning after Nebraska (14-23, 4-7 B1G) plated the first run of the game in the top of the frame. A single in run in the third inning and two eighth inning runs capped the scoring at 8-1 in favor of the Hoosiers.
Freshman Carter Mathison hit his 10th home run of the season and joined the shortlist of rookies to reach the 10-home run mark. The left-handed hitter joins Alex Dickerson (14; 2009), Micah Johnson (11; 2010) and Mike Sabo (11; 1985) as the only IU rookies to reach the double-digit home run mark. In all, he is the 37th Hoosier (56 total occurrences) to reach the 10-home run mark in a season, joining teammate Matthew Ellis. Mathison went 2-for-4 at the plate for his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen did a little bit of everything as he tied his career high with four hits to go along with three RBIs. It was his team-leading 17 multi-hit game of the season and his fifth multi-RBI game of the year. He also stole home in the eighth inning, the first time a Hoosier swiped home plate since Logan Sowers stole home against Dartmouth in 2015.
Moving his reached base streak to 28 games, freshman Josh Pyne went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. He posted his 10th double of the season as part of his 14th multi-hit game. Junior Hunter Jessee was on base three times in the contest with two walks and a single and he scored once.
In his eighth start of the season, senior Bradley Brehmer allowed just one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters, the most by a Hoosier pitcher since Gabe Bierman fanned 11 against Nebraska on May 9, 2021. Junior Ty Bothwell tossed 1 2/3 innings and struck out three, while redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp (1) picked up his first career save with 1 1/3 innings of clean relief work to close out the game. He struck out two batters and stranded all three inherited runners.
Griffin Everitt posted a two-hit game for Nebraska and three others chipped in one hit. Core Jackson drove in the lone RBI of the day for the Cornhuskers. Emmett Olson (1-3) took the loss with six runs allowed – only one earned – over six innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.
