BERLIN – Indiana men's swimming and diving freshman Rafael Miroslaw is making the most of his time at home in Germany.
Through two days at the Berlin Swim Open, Miroslaw has qualified twice for the FINA World Championships and, on Saturday (April 9), broke the German national record for the 100-meter freestyle at the Europasportpark.
Miroslaw swam a 47.92 in the preliminary heat of the 100 free to beat Marco di Carli's 48.24, the previous standard set in 2011. 47.92 ranks No. 2 in the world this year and automatically qualifies Miroslaw for the world championships set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, in June.
In the evening session in Berlin, Miroslaw won the A final with a 48.16, still better than the previous record and within the qualifying mark for the world meet. Miroslaw's previous best 100 free time was 49.51.
The Hamburg, Germany, native set the tone for the meet on Friday (April 8) in the 200-meter freestyle, when he beat his personal best by over 2.5 seconds in the prelim by touching in 1:46.04. His previous mark was 1:48.69 in 2019. He was slightly slower Friday evening at 1:46.76, but both times qualified him for the world championships in the 200 free as well.
Miroslaw completed a fantastic freshman season at Indiana in March at the 2022 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, where he captured a silver medal in the 400 Medley Relay (3:00.76) and earned six All-America honors which tied for the team high. In February, he contributed 71 points to IU's Big Ten team championship while medaling in five events and twice as an individual. He also became IU's fifth Big Ten 200 freestyle champion in seven years.
