BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – That never give up mentality reared its head once again on Friday (May 13) as the Indiana baseball program rallied from four runs down in the eighth inning to secure an 8-6 series opening victory over Minnesota at Bart Kaufman Field.
Minnesota (14-32, 4-15 B1G) scored three in the first inning before Indiana (23-26, 9-10 B1G) made it a one run game with two runs in the fourth inning. A three spot for the Gophers in the fifth made it a four-run game that stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth. The Hoosiers would send 11 batters to the plate in the inning and score six times to snatch the momentum and the victory.
Offensively, freshmen Carter Mathison and Josh Pyne each produced multi-hit games, as Pyne added his 13th multi-RBI game of the season. Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis and redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen each drove in two RBIs on the night.
Mathison extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate. He scored one run and drove in one RBI. The run batted in pushed his season total to 47, which moved him into a tie for No. 9 on the single season freshman RBI charts with Kyle Schwarber (2012). His two hits also moved his reached base streak to a season-best 16 games. The left-handed hitter collected each of his hits in IU's six-run eighth inning.
The two RBIs for Pyne put him one behind Mathison for the most in the Big Ten among freshmen with 46. Freshman Brock Tibbitts drove in his 40th RBI of the season to mark the third freshman to reach that mark. Along with Mathison (47) and Pyne (46), they become the first trio of freshmen to reach the 40-RBI mark in the same season in program history. The 1985 and 2008 squads each had two freshmen hit the mark.
While redshirt-junior starting pitcher Jack Perkins didn't factor into the decision, he did give IU five innings of work and the bullpen logged four scoreless innings to close out the win. Junior Nathan Stahl (1-2) came on in the eighth inning and stranded two runners in scoring position to earn the win.
Redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp (4) picked up his fourth save – three coming in Big Ten play – and has now factored into the last five Big Ten wins for IU. He got a pair of strikeouts, including the final out of the game.
Jack Liffrig (1-4) took the loss for Minnesota with four runs allowed on three hits in one-third of an inning of work. The offense was paced by Ronald Sweeny's three RBIs on his fifth home run of the season. Drew Stahl plated a pair of RBIs, while Chase Stanke and Boston Merila each posted two-hit games for the Gophers.
