Bothwell threw the final seven innings hitless in the first game of the doubleheader versus Gophers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After rain postponed Saturday's game after just one and one-half innings of play, redshirt-junior Ty Bothwell gave the Indiana baseball program seven innings of no-hit work on the mound to close carry the Hoosiers to a 12-0 victory over Minnesota in the first game of a double-header. The Golden Gophers won the series finale, 9-8, to salvage one win on the weekend.
Indiana (24-27, 10-11 B1G) scored two runs in the third inning to get IU on the board. The Hoosiers added three in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the eighth to cap the scoring. It was the second shutout of the season for IU and helped the Hoosiers secure a fourth straight Big Ten series win.
Bothwell (3-2) allowed just three base runners – all walks – with eight strikeouts against Minnesota (15-33, 5-16 B1G) over seven hitless, shutout innings to earn the win in the opening game. Coupled with senior Bradley Brehmer's two innings of one-hit work on Saturday, the Hoosiers allowed one-hit or fewer in a game for the first time since throwing a no hitter against Illinois on April 10, 2021.
Offensively in game one, the Hoosiers were led by freshman Josh Pyne's two-hit, three-RBI day at the plate. He doubled twice to produce his 14th multi-RBI game of the season. Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen had scored twice, drove in two RBIs and tripled as part of a two-hit game.
Freshman Carter Mathison hit his 16th home run of the season in the opener as part of a two-hit, two-RBI game. Junior Hunter Jessee had two hits and scored twice, and graduate student Tyler Doanes scored twice and was on base three times with a single and two walks.
For Minnesota in game one, Drew Stahl collected the lone hit – which came in Saturday's portion of the contest – and four other Gopher worked walks in the contest. J.P. Massey took the loss on the mound with six runs – three earned – allowed on six hits over 3 2/3 innings in game one.
In game two, IU scored one in the second inning before UM answered with three in the third and three in the fifth. The Hoosiers got three back in the bottom of the fifth and the Gophers tacked on one in the sixth. Two Indiana runs in the sixth and eighth innings game the home team a one-run lead, but Minnesota scored two in the ninth to capture the win.
Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis hit his 16th home run of the season in the second game, while Doanes and senior Phillip Glasser each posted three-hit games. Glasser scored twice and Doanes added three runs scored and one RBI. Jessee added a multi-RBI game with three runs batted in and Pyne added a double and one RBI to run his hitting streak to nine games.
Kyle Bork headed the Minnesota offense with four RBIs, while Chase Stanke had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Josh Culliver picked up the win in relief with two innings of scoreless relief and three strikeouts.
