Two Historic Programs Set to Kickoff August 26
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Eight-time NCAA Champion Indiana men's soccer will open its 50th season against reigning and three-time national title winner Clemson in a match set for Friday, August 26, at 7 p.m. ET on Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina, the programs announced on Thursday (May 18).
The teams last met 10 years ago in a 3-0 victory for IU as the Hoosiers would go on to win their most recent national title in that 2012 season. All-time, Indiana is 6-4-1 against the Tigers and undefeated in six straight matches going back to 1994 with five wins in that span. The 2022 contest is set to be the first on Riggs Field since 1998, a 2-1 victory for the Hoosiers.
Both programs are regulars in the NCAA Tournament. Indiana has qualified 46 times including an NCAA record 35 consecutive appearances, while Clemson has made 34 tournament trips. The duo has a combined 30 College Cup berths, with IU boasting 21 of those.
IU had won back-to-back titles in 1982 and 1983 when it was defeated by Clemson, 2-1, in the 1984 national championship match, decided by a goal in the final two minutes of play. After a 1987 regional final defeat to the Tigers, the Hoosiers would get revenge in 1998 and 2001 NCAA Tournament quarterfinal matches, both victories eventually leading an appearance in the national championship match.
The Indiana men's soccer program will release its full 2022 schedule on a later date.
