Pitching staff reaches school-record for strikeouts in a season in regular season finale
IOWA CITY – It was a one-run game in the ninth inning with the bases loaded, but the Indiana baseball team could not scratch across the game-tying run in its 2-1 loss at Iowa on Saturday (May 21) evening at Duane Banks Field.
It was single runs in three different innings, as Iowa (33-17, 16-7 B1G) tallied one in the first and one in the fifth to take the 2-0 lead. Indiana (25-30, 10-14 B1G) got a run back in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.
The trio of senior Bradley Brehmer, redshirt-junior Ty Bothwell and redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp struck out 13 batters and allowed just two runs – one earned – on three hits and five walks. Brehmer (4-4) took the loss with one run allowed over four innings of work. He struck out five and walked two.
The 13 strikeouts moved the season total to 561 and into the top spot on the IU single season charts. The previous mark of 558 was set in 2019. The 2022 staff is just the second to reach the 500-strikeout mark in program history.
With his 18th home run of the season, redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis moved into a tie for No. 7 on the single-season home run chart at Indiana. He is tied with Kyle Schwarber (18; 2013) and Alex Smith (18; 1986) and one shy of reaching the top five in program history.
Freshman Josh Pyne moved his hitting streak to 12 games and his reached base streak to 13 games – both his second-longest of the season – with a 1-for-2 night at the plate and a pair of walks. Freshman Carter Mathison moved his reached base streak to 22 games with a 1-for-4 night at the plate.
Junior Hunter Jessee produced his 16th multi-hit game of the season with a 3-for-5 night at the plate and moved his reached base streak to 16 games in the process. Redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen walked to push his reached base streak to 15 games.
The Hawkeyes managed just three hits, with one a first-inning home run from Keaton Anthony and Izaya Fullard chipped in a pair of singles. Kyle Huckstrof walked and came around to score the eventual game-winning run. Ty Langenberg (5-2) picked up the win with five scoreless innings and Ben Beutel (4) earned the save with two scoreless frames.
