Indiana tops Maryland in second extra-inning game between the teams at the Big Ten Tournament in 2022
OMAHA, Neb. – Taking the No. 10 team in the country to the mat twice in three days, the Indiana baseball program toppled top-seeded Maryland this time, 6-4, on Saturday (May 28) in an elimination game at Charles Schwab Field in the Big Ten Tournament.
It was the first time in Big Ten Tournament history that the No. 8 seed eliminated the No. 1 seed from the event, and just the second time in the history of the tournament a team played multiple extra-inning games the same season (Ohio State; 1993).
In all, it is the third extra inning game at the Big Ten Tournament, which is a tournament record. There had been two extra-inning games at five other events, including back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018. Indiana is now 4-5 all-time in extra inning games at the Big Ten Tournament.
Indiana (26-31) started the scoring with single runs in the second and third innings, before Maryland (45-11) got one back in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. After the Hoosiers scored on in the sixth to recapture the lead, the Terrapins pushed two across in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead of the game. IU added the equalizer in the top of the ninth, escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning and scored two runs in the 11th to earn the victory.
Freshman Josh Pyne posted his team-best 22nd multi-hit game of the season, which included his 20th double of the season to push him into a tie for No. 8 on the single season charts. He drove in two RBIs in the 11th inning to give IU the lead. The multi-RBI game is his 16th of the season and pushes his season total to 57, which is tied for the season-most in a single season by an IU freshman.
Redshirt-junior Matthew Ellis reached base twice, scored a run and drove in his 65th RBI of the year. He ended the game tied for No. 10 on the IU single season list and the most in a season since Alex Dickerson plated 75 in 2010.
Redshirt-junior Jack Perkins gave IU a solid five innings of work in the no decision. He allowed two runs on six hits and walked one batter. The right-hander struck out five to move his season total to 91 and into No. 10 on the single-season strikeout charts. In the game, he moved past Tanner Gordon, who fanned 90 during the 2019 campaign.
Freshman Ryan Kraft allowed two runs – one earned –on the one hit and one walk, before senior Braydon Tucker (2-3) threw the next six innings scoreless to earn the win. He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out five to close out the game.
Luke Shliger posted a three-hit night, as Maryland got single RBIs from Chris Alleyne and Troy Schreffler. Michael Walsh took the loss with two runs allowed on zero hits. He walked two, hit one and struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
