Mathison clubs 19th home run of the season to cap freshman season
OMAHA, Neb. – In its second game of the day at the Big Ten Tournament, the Indiana baseball program saw its season end in a 14-2 defeat at the hands of second-seeded Rutgers in a game that ended at 3:10 a.m. on Charles Schwab Field.
Rutgers (44-14) opened the scoring with four runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third to stake to a 9-0 lead. Indiana (27-32) got on the board in the sixth inning with two runs, but Rutgers added five in the seventh to enact the run rule.
The Hoosier pitching staff fanned five batters to push its season total to a school-record 600. The 600 strikeouts mark the second time in Big Ten history that a pitching staff fanned 600-plus batters in a season (Iowa; 2022). IU fanned at least five batters in 57 of 58 games and reached the double-digit mark 34 times.
Freshman Carter Mathison hit his 19th home run of the season to move into a tie for No. 5 on the Indiana single season charts with Craig Dedelow (2017) and Doug DeVore (1999). He drove in two RBIs to tie for the most RBIs by a freshman in a single season, equaling the total of Phil Dauphin (1998). The home run moved his reached base streak to 26 games, which is the second longest of the season, and enxtended his IU freshman home run record.
Freshman Josh Pyne singled and walked in the game, while redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen walked and scored a run.
Junior John-Biagio Modugno (0-4) took the loss with six runs allowed on five hits and three walks over one inning of work. Freshman Ryan Kraft allowed three runs – two earned – over three innings of work and junior Nathan Stahl surrendered five runs over two innings of work.
Seven of the nine Rutgers starters collected hits and drove in RBIs in the game, led by a two-hit, three RBI game from Nick Cimillo. Brian Fitzpatrick (3-1) tossed four scoreless innings and allowed a single and a walk with six strikeouts to earn the win.
