
Third Straight Series Victory Comes at Michigan

Mathison and Tibbitts each drive in three RBIs, Sharp earns the win in relief
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Redshirt-sophomore Reese Sharp delivered a dazzling relief appearance for the second straight day and the freshman duo of Carter Mathison and Brock Tibbitts powered the offense in a 10-8 victory over Michigan on Sunday (May 8) afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium to earn the series victory.
Runs were scored in seven of the nine innings and there were six lead changes in the series finale, as Indiana (22-25, 8-10 B1G) opened things with two runs in the second inning. Michigan (24-20, 10-8 B1G) got two each in the second and third frames, before a three-run fifth for IU. Two more in the fifth and seventh innings for UM were answered by single runs in the sixth and seventh, two runs in the eight and one run in the ninth for the Hoosiers.
Mathison's 15th home run of the season gave him the Indiana freshman home run record, breaking a tie with Alex Dickerson in the record books. The home run also moved Mathison into a tie for No. 2 in the Big Ten with teammate Matthew Ellis in that category. He totaled three RBIs and scored twice.
A perfect day at the plate for Tibbitts produced three RBIs, two runs scored and one walk to go along with four hits. One of those four hits was his ninth home run of the season, and another went of a double. Freshman Josh Pyne reached base safely twice with a double and a walk and scored two runs, while redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen scored two runs as he walked and was hit-by-pitch.
Five Indiana pitchers combined to allowed eight runs on nine hits and struck out nine Wolverine hitters, highlighted by Sharp's three innings of relief work to close out the game. Sharp (3-6) allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out three to pick up the win.
Joey Velazquez was one of three Michigan hitters with two RBIs, as he plated both with a home run. Riley Bertram and Dylan Stanton each collected two RBIs in the game, as well. Noah Rennard (4-2) took the loss with three runs allowed – one earned – on three hits and a pair of walks.
