Pro IU: Men’s Soccer Update

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Coming to the midway point of the 2022 Major League Soccer season, it's time to look at how former Indiana men's soccer athletes are doing at the professional level.
On Friday, rookie goalkeeper Roman Celentano earned his third clean sheet in nine matches since becoming FC Cincinnati's starting netminder. In eight MLS games, Celentano had allowed one goal or less six times. Win a 1-0 victory over Orlando City, Celentano and fellow former Hoosier and FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan have the team in position for a MLS Cup Playoffs spot, currently sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference.
Four more Hoosiers are currently in position to qualify for the playoffs, with Mason Toye and Justin Rennicks helping CF Montréal and the New England Revolution to third and sixth place, respectively, in the Eastern Conference. In the Western Conference, Jack Maher and Nashville SC sit fifth, Eriq Zavaleta and LA Galaxy are No. 6 and Will Bruin and the Seattle Sounders are seventh.
Bruin opened the scoring in the eighth minute of a 3-0 Seattle Sounders victory on Saturday after separating from his marker and powering a header past the Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper.
"That was such a good goal, and true to who Will is," Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said after the match.
The same day, Mason Toye returned to action for the first time since August 2021 when he was subbed on in the 78th minute of CF Montréal's 2-1 victory over Charlotte FC. Toye nearly scored on his very first touch via a header from a cross, but his attempt skipped just wide.
In Columbus, Aidan Morris has seen added minutes while starting the last two matches for the Crew. On June 22, Morris was named to the MLS Team of the Week after his performance in a 1-1 draw with Charlotte FC.
In MLS Next Pro, Victor Bezerra bagged a brace over the weekend, scoring in the 17th and 76th minutes to lead Chicago Fire II to a 4-3 victory over New England Revolution II. He now is tied as the team leader with four goals, sharing with Alex Monis and former IU teammate Josh Penn, who also leads the squad with three assists. Penn had a scoring spree earlier in the month with four goals in two matches, highlighted by a hat trick against Toronto FC II on May 27.
