BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer has hired assistant coach Tyler Schmutz, the program announced on Thursday morning.
"We are thrilled to have Tyler as our next assistant men's golf coach," Mayer said. "He checked all the boxes we were looking for and is a perfect fit for both me and Indiana University. His experience both at the DI and DII levels will be invaluable to us. He is going to hit the ground running and will spend the rest of the summer evaluating prospects at tournaments around the country."
Schmutz joins the Indiana program after spending the 2021-22 season with the Maryland Terrapins. The Terps finished third at the Big Ten Championships, just two strokes out of the title spot.
"First and foremost, I'd like to thank Coach Mayer for the opportunity to join his staff," Schmutz said. "Coaching in the Big Ten against him and his team allowed me to see firsthand how great of a coach he is. I am excited for the opportunity to grow as a coach working as his Assistant. I look forward to joining his staff, and doing everything I can to help the team win."
Prior to his stint with Maryland, Schmutz served as the head coach of the Wabash Little Giants for two seasons. During his time in Crawfordsville the squad broke the team scoring average record in 2019-20, broke the single-round team scoring record in 2021, finished fourth in the North Coast Athletic Conference in 2021 (best finish for a Wabash team since 2009), and had two players named to All-Conference honors.
Before Wabash, Schmutz was the assistant coach at Regis University (Division II) in Denver from 2017-19. In that position, he organized and conducted practices, worked with individual players, and oversaw the team's strength and conditioning program, among other duties.
Prior to working at Regis, he was the Director of Client Management for GSE Worldwide, where he managed logistics for players on the PGA and Korn Ferry tours.
Schmutz graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. in 2014. He earned a Master of Science degree in organizational leadership from Regis in May 2019. In 2013, he earned Cleveland Golf Srixon Scholar All-America honors and attended Parkland College in Champaign, Ill. prior to attending Huntingdon, where he was a PING All-Central Region selection.
