IUTF Heads West for NCAA Outdoor Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Track & Field concludes the 2022 outdoor season with the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Five Hoosiers will make the trip with the meet beginning on Wednesday, June 8 and wrapping up on Saturday, June 11.

Last Time Out: NCAA East Prelims
The Hoosiers were last in action at home when they hosted the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the Haugh Track & Field Complex. Five Hoosiers advanced to the national championships while another three made it to the quarterfinal of their respective event. Sean Mockler (Hammer Throw), Maddy Pollard (Shot Put), Jayden Ulrich (Shot Put and Discus), Mahogany Jenkins (High Jump), and Paola Fernandez-Sola (Long Jump) landed in the top-12 of their events to earn them a spot at the national meet. On the track, Hannah Stoffel (1500m), Camden Marshall (800m), and Shaton Vaughn (400m Hurdles) all appeared in the quarterfinals.
Tickets Punched
Five Indiana track & Field Athletes will be making the trip out to Eugene, Ore. for the 2022 Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 8-11. Paola Fernandez-Sola will represent the Hoosiers in the long jump after leaping a mark of 6.33m (20' 10.75") at NCAA East Prelims. Fernandez-Sola finished in third out of the 48 entered in the event. Maddy Pollard will compete in her final meet in the Cream & Crimson as she competes in the shot put. Pollard put a mark of 16.87m (55' 4.25") to the get her to the national meet. Jayden Ulrich looks to compete in two events at nationals, the shot put and the discus. Ulrich picked up a mark of 17.05m (55' 11.25") in the shot put and 52.73m (173' 0") in the discus. Rounding out the women's field is Mahogany Jenkins, who after a jump off, will make her debut at NCAAs in the high jump. Jenkins cleared a mark of 1.81m (5' 11.52") which matched her personal best. On the men's side, Sean Mockler punched his ticket Eugene in the hammer after seeing a mark of 67.56m (221' 8").
New Throwers on the Block
Two freshmen have emerged on the scene in their first year with Indiana Track & Field. Jayden Ulrich and Sean Mockler are both school record holders in their respective events and will represent the Hoosiers on the national stage this week. Heaving a mark of 59.01m (193' 7") in the discus, Ulrich holds the program record in the event and will compete in the shot put and discus in Eugene. Ulrich also was crowned the Big Ten Champion in the discus and place seventh in the shot put. At Penn Relays, Mockler set the program record in the hammer throw after capturing a mark of 68.68m (225' 4"). Mockler was the silver medalist at Big Ten Championships and looks to keep the momentum going at NCAAs.

On Monday, May 16 Indiana Track & Field announced that Associate Head Coach Ed Beathea would be promoted to Head Coach of the IU Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country program at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. The announcement comes a month after current Head Coach Ron Helmer announced his retirement after the 2022-23 season.
