CLEMSON, S.C. — One of the top defenders in the country, Indiana men's soccer redshirt senior defender Daniel Munie was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Thursday (Aug. 25).
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches. Munie is one of 38 players named to the preseason watch list.
Hoosiers have earned national player of the year honors on eight occasions, most recently Andrew Gutman in 2018. IU head coach Todd Yeagley was named the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year in 1994, while teammate Brian Maisonneuve was picked for the Hermann Trophy that same season. In 2002, the award was merged.
An All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2021, Munie led the IU back line to a NCAA-best 13 clean sheets. This preseason, Munie was picked Top Drawer Soccer (TDS) first-team Best XI and was rated the No. 3 player – and top defender – in the country by TDS. Munie will also serve as team captain.
Munie and the No. 8-ranked Hoosiers begin the 2022 season Friday (Aug. 27) night in a road matchup with reigning national champion and No. 1 Clemson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the match will be televised on ESPNU.
The 2022 season will be the 50th varsity season for Indiana men's soccer and a celebration of the program's Tradition of Excellence. IU men's soccer is an eight-time NCAA Champion, 17-time Big Ten regular season champion, 15-time Big Ten Tournament Champion and has made 46 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including an active streak of 35 consecutive berths.
