Indiana Field Hockey Heads to California for a Three Game Slate

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– After two narrow losses and strong defensive showings during the Hoosier Invitational, Indiana Field Hockey returns to play Labor Day weekend with a trip to California and a trio of games on the docket.
This will be the program's first time playing in the Golden State since 2015. Indiana will open play on Friday, Sept. 2 at Stanford at 2 p.m., then face California on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m., before closing out the weekend on Labor Day at UC Davis for a noon showdown.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
-This will be the first time Indiana plays all three programs in some time. It'll be the Hoosiers' first appearance against Stanford since 2018, first vs. Cal since 2015, and the first-time playing UC Davis since 2016.
-STANFORD:
-The Cardinal are off to a 1-1 start for the 2022 season. In the season opener, they beat Holy Cross, 2-1, in overtime and then lost at No. 4 Maryland, 1-0.
-Stanford got goals in their win over Holy Cross from seniors Lynn Vandertichele and Rose Winter. Both players have been integral pieces of the Stanford program for a few years now win Vandertichele having nine career goals and Winter notching five.
-While showing strong defensive prowess in their first two games, only allowing two total goals, the Cardinal also do a good job generating offensive opportunities. Stanford is taking 9.5 shots per game and took 15 against Holy Cross.
-CAL:
-Cal is off to an 0-2 start after a Midwest trip the past weekend. The Golden Bears fell to No. 24 Miami (Ohio), 3-1 and Ohio by a score of 3-1, too.
-California's goal scorers include graduate student Luzi Persiehl and junior Sara Stone.
-The Bears took 29 shots in their first two games, but only had 12 that were on goal.
-Senior Cato Knipping has been the Bears' keeper through both games and has made seven saves.
-UC DAVIS:
-One game in and UC Davis is off to an 0-1 start. The aggies lost 3-2 at home to Holy Cross this past Saturday.
-Skylar Richards and Grace Austin were UC Davis' two goal scorers against Holy Cross. Additionally, Richards took three shots in the game, including two that were on goal.
-Like Indiana, UC Davis will play three games this weekend with Indiana being its third of three matchups of the weekend.
HOOSIER INVITATIONAL REWIND
-While the results weren't what Indiana hoped for, the Hoosiers still showed a lot of toughness in their first games of the year at the Hoosier Invitational.
-In the event, Indiana fell to Kent State in overtime, 1-0, and lost to No. 6 Liberty, 2-0.
-The Hoosier defense proved to be very impressive as expected. Against Kent State, the game was scoreless throughout regulation and of Kent State's six shots for the game, only two of them were on goal.
-Against Liberty, the Hoosiers didn't allow the reigning national runner-up to get a shot off in the first quarter and only allowed two goals for the high-powered offense. This performance follows Liberty's game the day before where they scored nine goals.
-Sophomore goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge had eight saves throughout the weekend, including seven against Liberty.
-Despite not getting one behind the net, the Indiana offense did a great job of creating chances against Kent State, generating 11 shots on goals.
-For the weekend, sophomore Yip Van Wonderen, freshman Jule Hufer, and junior Jemima Cookson each took at least three shots. Van Wonderen (4) and Hufer (3) had all of their attempts on goal.
-Six Hoosiers made their Indiana debut over the weekend, including five freshmen. Freshmen Jule Hufer, Anna Mozeleski, and Emma Thompson started both games. Freshmen Kai Snell and Kylie Dawson and Albany transfer Lara Mortz all got extensive run off the bench.
OVERTIME TIDBITS
-Senior midfielder Kennedy Reardon has made 37 consecutive starts dating back to the start of her sophomore season. She has made 54 total appearances to date. Reardon has a chance to join special company by the end of the year for most games played in program history.
-Indiana's visit to the Golden State marks a trip that is far away, but a state where the program has a strong presence in. Indiana Field Hockey has had 14 players in the team's history from California, including current assistant coach and 2009 IU alum, Dani Castro. Castro grew up in San Diego, Calif. The program's 14 California natives make California the state that has produced the second-most IU Field Hockey players, only behind Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania has the most, with 42 players in program history coming from the Quaker State.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J. for the 2018 fall season.
-The Indiana roster features nice depth across all four classes, but its freshman and sophomore classes have shown particular strength through the first weekend of the regular season. Of Indiana's starters against Kent State and Liberty, eight of them were either a freshman or sophomore.
-The Hoosiers are looking to build off the momentum the program displayed in its 2021 season where the team won 10 games for the first time since 2012 and made a Big Ten Tournament appearance. The 2021 season also included two wins over ranked opponents and seven shutout victories, a program record.
-After the three-game California slate, Indiana will host Ball State and Bellarmine on Sept. 9th and 11th, respectively. Ball State will be the team's pediatric cancer awareness game and the Bellarmine game will include a youth clinic prior to the game for children in the eighth grade and younger for skills and drills with IU Field Hockey players.
-In two weeks from Friday, Indiana will play its first conference game of the season when they visit Iowa on Friday, Sept. 16 to open Big Ten play.
