Hoosier Field Hockey Takes on Iowa and Longwood

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– Riding their first five-game win streak since 2014, Indiana Field Hockey is rolling. Five straight wins and a 19-7 scoring advantage in those games has Indiana's momentum in the right place ahead of an important weekend.
The Hoosiers will open Big Ten play with a tough road test against No. 5 Iowa on Friday before heading back home for a Sunday morning showdown with Longwood.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Indiana takes on Iowa and Longwood with big implications as teams start to reach mid-season form.
-Friday's game against Iowa represents a huge opportunity as it is the conference opener and as a national test with Iowa being ranked No. 5 overall.
-In Big Ten Field Hockey, each team plays eight conference games and the top seven make the Big Ten Tournament, based on conference record.
-Longwood marks the beginning of the end of Indiana's non-conference play with only four non-conference games remaining, including the Lancers.
IOWA:
-The Hawkeyes are off to a very strong start with a 5-1 record and two ranked wins over No. 20 Wake Forest and No. 22 UMass. Iowa also took No. 2 North Carolina to overtime, losing narrowly, 3-2.
-Three of Iowa's wins have been shutouts, including a 6-0 win over Saint Louis and a 4-0 win over Boston University.
-Anithe Nijziel, a fifth-year player for Iowa was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. She led the Hawkeye defensive unit that only allowed five total shots in two games last weekend.
-Junior Alex Wesneki and sophomore Annika Herbine are tied on the team as points leaders with 14 each. Wesneki has scored seven goals while Herbine has five goals and four assists.
-LONGWOOD:
-The Lancers opened the season with a win over Queens University of Charlotte and beat Davidson in their most recent game. Their losses come to Richmond, Towson and Temple.
-Longwood has a balance offense as seven players have scored for the team this fall, six of them have scored once. Caroline Hampton is their leading scorer with two goals.
-This will be the second all-time meeting between Indiana and Longwood. IU won the only other previous matchup, 5-0, in 2006.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Indiana's wins over Ball State and Bellarmine proved to be the team's best performances of the season thus far after a 5-0 win over the Cardinals and a 6-3 win over the Knights.
-Against Ball State, the Hoosiers were firing on all cylinders with getting everyone involved. Of the five goals, Indiana had five different goal scorers.
-Freshman Anna Mozeleski scored her third goal of the year and the first of the game, fresh off her Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor in the week prior.
-Sophomore Kayla Kiwak had her second goal of the year in her second consecutive game.
-Junior Meghan Dillon and sophomores Sofia Arrebola Garcia and Yip van Wonderen all scored their first goals of the season.
-Sophomore Arabella Loveridge earned her second clean sheet of the year.
-Against Bellarmine, Indiana cleaned up a rocky start that saw them down 3-1 early in the second period after a weather delay. From there, the Hoosiers went on a scoring outburst while locking down defensively.
-In the second half, Indiana scored four goals with junior Jemima Cookson leading the way with a hat trick for the game. Yip van Wonderen also had two assists.
-In the third quarter, where the Hoosiers applied the pressure, the Indiana defense didn't allow Bellarmine to get one shot off.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Through the first three weeks of the season, Indiana's Sydney Keld is tied for first in NCAA Field Hockey for the most defensive saves with four. The redshirt junior is tied with Macy McHale of Miami of Ohio.
-Sunday's game against Longwood will feature the spirit theme of "International Day" where heritage from all nationalities around the world will be celebrated and recognized.
-If IU were to have their third consecutive undefeated weekend and therefore win seven games in a row, it would be the best start to a season under head coach Kayla Bashore. It would also continue to match the program's longest win streak since the 2014 season, which also reached seven.
-Indiana is seeking its first win over Iowa since 2015, when the Hoosiers won 3-1 in Bloomington. If Indiana would win it would be the team's first win at Iowa since 2009.
-At this point, junior Jemima Cookson leads Indiana in goals scored with five while also notching an assist to bring her to 11 points.
-Freshman Anna Mozeleski isn't far behind with seven points coming from three goals and an assist.
-Sophomore Yip van Wonderen leads the team in assists with four through the first seven games.
-Senior Kennedy Reardon made her 42nd consecutive start against Bellarmine last weekend, dating back to her sophomore year.
-Junior Brinley Foster and sophomores Meredith Lee and Amanda Frank all registered their first minutes of the season in the win over Ball State last Friday.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J., for the 2018 fall season.
