Indiana Field Hockey Prepares for Louisville and Miami (OH)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– As winners of six of their last seven, Indiana enters into a weekend of major opportunity with No. 4 Louisville and Miami of Ohio on the docket.
With Louisville being a top-five team, and a previously ranked team in Miami of Ohio, scheduled, the Hoosiers have two great opportunities to strengthen their resume. This will be Indiana's regular season weekend with no conference games.
CORNER HITS:
-SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-The regular season reaches its approximate halfway point with this weekend's games. Louisville and Miami mark Indiana's 10th and 11th game, respectively, of 19 regular season games.
-After this weekend, Indiana will only have one non-conference game left in the regular season.
-LOUISVILLE:
-The Cardinals have asserted themselves among the nation's best with a 7-1 start, including wins among some high-quality opponents. Louisville has beaten No. 11 Penn State on the road, No. 13 Princeton at a neutral site, and defeated No. 4 Michigan at home.
-The team's only loss comes to No. 2 North Carolina at home.
-Louisville is currently outscoring its opponents, 18-8. The Cardinals are only allowing one goal per game.
-The trio of Julie Kouijzer, Katie Schneider and Mattie Tabor lead the Cardinals in scoring, each with four goals on the season.
-Last year, Indiana lost at Louisville in a close game, 1-0.
-MIAMI:
-The RedHawks are off to a strong start with a 5-3 record, including a win over No. 23 Ohio State.
-Miami lost in close fashion to No. 8 Michigan and No. 14 Harvard each by just one goal, including taking Harvard to overtime.
-Miami is led by the duo of Claudia Negrete Garcia and Paula Pena Martinez. Both players have six goals on the season, combining for 12 of the 15 total goals scored by Miami this year.
-The all-time series between Indiana and Miami is filled with competitive matchups. Indiana leads the all-time series, 13-8.
-In 2021, Indiana won at Miami in a tight game, by a score of 1-0.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Last weekend, Indiana opened Big Ten play on the Friday at Iowa and hosted Longwood on Sunday.
-The Hoosiers fell to Iowa, 5-1, on Friday. Indiana junior Jemima Cookson continued her string of strong play, scoring her sixth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by junior Meghan Dillon.
-Cookson's goal against the Hawkeyes marked her fourth in the team's past three games after having a hat trick against Bellarmine. She leads the team in goals (6) and points (13).
-Indiana was victorious over Longwood, defeating them, 2-0, with both goals coming from redshirt junior Sydney Keld.
-Through the first half, the game was scoreless and both teams had an even shot differential, at four shots taken between both sides.
-In the 35th minute, Keld broke the scoring drought, shooting the ball from the left side of the goal after an insert off the penalty corner from Cookson.
-Keld scored her second goal of the day in the 57th minute on a penalty stroke. The goal served as the clincher to give IU a comfortable lead and seal the game.
-Prior to the game's start, Indiana and Longwood celebrated International Day where each team had their players from different countries meet at midfield for a unifying picture.
-The nationalities represented in the photo included England, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Argentina.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Jemima Cookson is the team leader in goals and points with 6 and 13, respectively. Sydney Keld and freshman Anna Mozeleski are tied for second on the team with three goals each.
-In total, nine Hoosiers have found the back of the net through the team's first nine games.
-Sophomore Yip van Wonderen leads the team in assists with four on the season thus far.
-Three freshmen: Anna Mozeleski, Jule Hufer and Emma Thompson have started every game for the Hoosiers this season.
-Indiana is scoring an average of 2.44 goals per game compared to their opponents' average of 1.67.
-Throughout the season, Indiana is averaging about 10.2 shots per game and the team is shooting on goal at a clip of 64.9%.
-The trip to Louisville marks familiar territory for the Indiana program. Sophomore Meredith Lee is a Louisville native and a 2021 graduate of Assumption High School in Louisville.
-Additionally, Kentucky is the state that has produced the third most Hoosiers in Indiana Field Hockey program history. Kentucky has produced 12 Hoosiers in program history, with California being second (14) and Pennsylvania in first (42).
-Through the first nine games, Indiana sophomore goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has 32 saves with three clean sheets.
-Sunday's game vs. Miami will be "Staff & Faculty Appreciation Day" where members of the team will recognize impactful professors and faculty members at midfield as part of pregame ceremonies.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J. for the 2018 fall season.
