Indiana Field Hockey to Host Rutgers and Penn State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––––– Coming off a 1-1 weekend, Indiana stands at 7-4 entering an important weekend against two ranked Big Ten opponents on Friday and Sunday against No. 21 Rutgers and No. 6 Penn State, respectively.
The games will be Indiana's first home matchups against Big Ten opponents this season. The Hoosiers have won seven of their last nine games and are seeking their first conference win.
CORNER HITS:
-SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Over halfway through the regular season, Indiana reaches an important stretch that includes seven of their eight remaining regular season games being against conference opponents.
-The Hoosiers host two top-25 teams this weekend that will play a big role in where Indiana shakes up in the conference standings.
-RUTGERS:
-The Scarlet Knights have started off the year 6-4 while going up against high-quality competition.
-In the Big Ten, Rutgers is 2-1 with wins over No. 23 Ohio State and Michigan State but lost to Michigan in their most recent game.
-Rutgers also owns wins over No. 15 Connecticut and No. 25 Monmouth.
-The Rutgers offense is quite balanced with six players who have scored two goals and Marique Dieudonne being the team leader with three.
-Last year, Rutgers got the best of Indiana in two close games, winning twice. They won 1-0 in the regular season and 3-1 in the Big Ten Tournament.
-PENN STATE:
-The Nittany Lions come into the weekend at 8-1 on the year and 3-0 in the Big Ten.
-Their conference wins are over Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. The only loss was early in the season vs. Louisville by a score of 2-1.
-Since that loss, Penn State has won seven games in a row.
-For the majority of the season, Penn State has been handling opponents, outscoring teams 27-10 throughout their nine games played.
-The Nittany Lions also are outshooting teams 137-80.
-Sophia Gladiuex leads their offense with nine goals, placing her fourth in the Big Ten for most individual goals.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Last weekend, Indiana traveled just south of the Indiana-Kentucky border to face No. 4 Louisville and then hosted Miami (OH) on Sunday.
-The Hoosiers split the weekend, going 1-1 with a 2-0 loss at Louisville and a 2-1 win over Miami.
-The Louisville game was a tight defensive battle for the majority of the game. Both teams were held scoreless through the first half. Arabella Loveridge made a multitude of incredible saves throughout the game, including an impressive denial of a Louisville penalty stroke at the end of the first quarter.
-In the second half, the Cardinals added in two goals in short order midway through the third period, but Indiana did not stop pushing the Cardinals to the very end. The Hoosiers earned five penalty corners in the fourth quarter, but just could not convert.
-The matchup vs. Miami was also a close one from start to finish. Both teams wasted no time to ignite the offense as the game was tied 1-1 by the end of the first quarter.
-Sydney Keld got Indiana on the board with her fourth goal of the season via penalty stroke in the fifth minute of the game. The RedHawks would tie it up by the 13th minute.
-Nearing halftime, Yip van Wonderen broke through with a rocket of a shot just inside the circle at the 28th minute mark. The 2-1 lead at halftime would prove to be enough for the entire game.
-Miami (OH) pushed hard in the second half, but Loveridge put a stop to their effort with four second half saves.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Jemima Cookson is the team leader in goals and points with 6 and 13, respectively. Sydney Keld is second on the team with four goals and 10 total points.
-Keld also leads the entire NCAA in defensive saves with nine thus far this season.
-For assists, sophomore Yip van Wonderen leads Indiana with four. She also has two goals to her name this year.
-In total, nine Hoosiers have found the back of the net through the team's first nine games.
-Three freshmen: Anna Mozeleski, Jule Hufer and Emma Thompson have started every game for the Hoosiers this season.
-Through the first 11 games, Indiana sophomore goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge has 43 saves with three clean sheets.
-Loveridge's three shutouts puts her at the third-most shutouts in the Big Ten. She is only one short of four, the leading mark for the conference.
-Indiana is scoring an average of 2.18 goals per game compared to their opponents' average of 1.64.
-Throughout the season, Indiana is averaging about 9.5 shots per game and the team is shooting on goal at a clip of 62.9%.
-This weekend's games vs. No. 21 Rutgers and No. 6 Penn State will be the team's fourth and fifth games playing against nationally ranked opponents. Including Penn State, four of those games will have been against top-ten ranked teams, at the time of playing them.
-Sunday's game vs. Penn State will be this year's "Breast Cancer Awareness Game" where players of both teams will wear pink accessories such as pink socks or grips, in support of the fight against breast cancer.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J. for the 2018 fall season.
