Indiana Field Hockey Set for Two-Game Home Slate

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– Following an undefeated weekend in California, the Indiana Field Hockey team returns to Bloomington with two home games on the docket. The Hoosiers will host a pair of familiar foes in Ball State on Friday, Sept. 9, and Bellarmine on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Indiana will look to extend its winning streak, as the team last eclipsed four wins in a row in 2017, and five wins in a row in 2014.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Unlike the west coast trip last weekend, IU knows both Ball State and Bellarmine well. This will be the eighth time in the last ten seasons that IU plays in-state foe Ball State, and the 20th meeting all-time. While this will only be the third ever meeting with Bellarmine, the Hoosiers played against the Knights just one year ago.
-In last year's meetings, IU defeated Ball State, 1-0, in Muncie while beating Bellarmine at home, 3-0.
-The Hoosiers also played Ball State on Aug. 19 in a scrimmage, where Indiana won 3-0 in Bloomington.
-BALL STATE:
-The Cardinals have started the season 2-1 after a win over Saint Francis and a 1-1 split between Lehigh and Villanova this past weekend.
-The Ball State attack is quite balanced, as the team's seven goals scored this season have come from seven different players.
-The Cardinals are recording an average of 9.7 shots per game and 65.5% of the time, their shots are on goal.
-Both Hannah Johnston and Ally Butler have seen time in the cage. Johnston started the team's first two games while Butler made the start against Villanova where she had 13 saves.
-BELLARMINE:
-The Knights, like Indiana were in California over Labor Day, playing two of IU's opponents, Cal and UC Davis. Bellarmine is still seeking its first win, falling short previously to Rider and Lock Haven, in addition to Cal and UC Davis.
-Bellarmine's Amber Hofenk Jerembo, a senior, leads the team with two goals while only taking six shots for the whole season.
-Sophomores Isabel Gladys and Marit Van Der Bend are the team's other goalscorers through the first weeks of the season. Each have notched one.
-Nine members of Bellarmine's roster are in-state Kentucky natives. Seven of the nine are from Louisville.
WEST COAST REWIND:
-The Hoosiers found their winning ways in California. Indiana beat Stanford, 3-2 (OT), Cal, 3-2 (OT) and UC Davis, 2-0.
-The Stanford and Cal wins proved to be very hard-earned games with intensely dramatic finishes.
-Against Stanford, Indiana found itself in a deficit twice, down 1-0, and 2-1. Both times freshman Jule Hufer scored to equalize the game. The second goal came near the game at the 55th minute. In overtime, Maggie Carter made a phenomenal move to evade a Stanford defender in the circle while then lacing an off-balance shot, sneaking the ball past the keeper for the win.
-Just two days later, Indiana had to pull from behind again, down 2-0 after three periods of play. Junior Jemima Cookson scored both fourth goals in the fourth period to send the game to overtime. Freshman Anna Mozeleski got the opportunity to shoot in a penalty stroke and nailed it. This was Mozeleski's first career goal.
-The UC Davis game featured the Hoosiers taking care of business early, with Mozeleski scoring eight minutes in and sophomore Kayla Kiwak scoring in the fourth period to put the game away with a safe 2-0 lead.
-Redshirt-junior Sydney Keld made some crucial defensive plays down the stretch to help Indiana maintain leads and preserve ties, while also supporting goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge. Keld had three defensive saves for the weekend.
-Junior Meghan Dillon made her first start of the season against Stanford and kept her starting role all weekend.
OVERTIME TIDBITS:
-Both games this weekend have a special theme. The Ball State game is the team's pediatric cancer awareness game, and the Bellarmine game will include a youth clinic prior to the game for children in the eighth grade and younger for skills and drills with IU Field Hockey players.
-Three Hoosiers are tied for the most goals on the team (2) after the first two weeks of the season. Mozeleski, Hufer, and Cookson all have two goals to their name. Mozeleski is the undisputed leader in shots on the team, too. She has already charted 13 shots, with eight of them being on goal.
-Through five games, Indiana has already played three overtime games. The program has not had a single season with three overtime games since 2016.
-Indiana sophomore Meredith Lee will get to face a school from her hometown when Bellarmine comes to Bloomington. Lee is a Louisville native, the same city in which Bellarmine is located.
-Senior midfielder Kennedy Reardon has made 40 consecutive starts dating back to the start of her sophomore season. She has made 57 total appearances to date. Reardon has a chance to join special company by the end of the year for most games played in program history.
-The 2022 team captains for IU Field Hockey are senior Kennedy Reardon and redshirt junior Sydney Keld. Both are captains for the first time in their Indiana careers.
-New Jersey natives, Madi Guyer and Kylie Dawson reunite as teammates for the first time in four years. Guyer, a senior midfielder, and Dawson, a freshman back, last played together at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, N.J. for the 2018 fall season.
-The Indiana roster features nice depth across all four classes, but its freshman and sophomore classes have shown particular strength through the first weekend of the regular season. In each game thus far, Indiana has had either seven or eight underclassmen in the starting lineup.
-In just a week from Friday, Indiana will play its first conference game of the season when the team will visit Iowa on Friday, Sept. 16 to open Big Ten play.
-The Hoosiers are looking to build off the momentum the program displayed in its 2021 season where the team won 10 games for the first time since 2012 and made a Big Ten Tournament appearance. The 2021 season also included two wins over ranked opponents and seven shutout victories, a program record.
