ROSEMONT, Ill. – Following an outstanding weekend at the Commodore Challenge, Indiana graduate student and distance runner Jake Gebhardt was tabbed the Big Ten's Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Jan. 18) afternoon.
The Sterling, Ill. native raced to a pair of victories and personal bests in the 800 meters and the Mile at the Commodore Challenge on Saturday to begin his 2023 campaign.
Gebhardt broke into the sub 4-minute mile club alongside teammate Camden Marshall with a winning mark of 3:59.18. His time moved him into No. 9 in program history and made him the 10th runner to break four minutes in an IU uniform.
To follow that up, he ran a Big Ten-leading time of 1:51.85 to win the 800 meters just 90 minutes after the conclusion of the Mile.
He becomes the first Hoosier to win a Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week and Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor in the same season since Kyle Mau did so in 2019.
Gebhardt is the first men's athlete to win the conference's weekly honor since Rikkoi Brathwaite's record-setting weekend in December of 2021.
He finished 16th at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships this fall and will figure to be a strong runner at multiple distances during the track season.
