BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Head coach Erwin van Bennekom expresses his gratitude to Emily Basten for her dedication and service to the Indiana women's soccer program while announcing a new addition to his staff in Hannah Sullivan.
"Emily has been a support to me and has had a huge influence on the program over the last seven years," van Bennekom said. "First as a student athlete, graduate assistant and in the last few years as an assistant coach."
Basten spent six seasons with the Hoosiers, most recently serving as an assistant coach and the team's recruiting coordinator. She is an alum of the program after transferring to IU for her senior year in 2015. Basten served as a graduate assistant for two seasons in 2017 and 2018 and became the team's volunteer assistant in 2019.
In 2020, Basten earned a full-time position on van Bennekom's coaching staff as an assistant coach. She continued to build upon her role within the program and create opportunities for growth. In her first season, Basten helped lead the Hoosiers to their best season in program history with a 6-5-1 record, tying the number of wins in the program.
"I want to wish Emily all the best in her career outside of the game, and we all know she will be extremely successful. She will forever part of IUWS."
Sullivan will begin where Basten left off by continuing to produce growth within the program, players and the sport.
"We are very excited to welcome Hannah Sullivan to our program," van Bennekom said. "She will serve as an assistant and goalkeeper coach and will be involved in all aspects of the program. During the hiring process, Hannah's drive, competitiveness, expertise in training of the goalkeepers and her personality stood out in the hiring process. It very quickly became clear that she was the best fit for our program!"
In her most recent role, Sullivan served as an assistant coach at Ball State under head coach Josh Rife. Her responsibilities included recruiting, travel and team operations.
"I am very excited to become a part of the IU family," Sullivan said. "I want to thank Erwin for giving me the opportunity to join this experienced and accomplished staff."
In 2022, the Cardinals went 7-5-8 on the year. They shutout six opponents and made it to the Mid-American Conference Championship.
Prior to Ball State, Sullivan helped lead Marian University to a program record of 21 wins during her first season with the Knights in 2021.
Sullivan played collegiate soccer at Indiana State where she was a four-year member of the Sycamores soccer program from 2016-19. She appeared in 43 matches making 39 starts. Sullivan finished her career ranked fifth in program history with 177 career saves. She held a 1.57 career goals against average that is ranked second in program history but is the best an ISU goalkeeper has played in one season between the posts.
A Fishers, Ind., native, Sullivan was a standout goalkeeper at Fishers High School, helping lead the team to three IHSAA Semi-State appearances, including a 2014 State Championship and a 2013 state runner-up finish. She was named all-state honorable mention honors, along with earning first team all-district accolades, during the 2014 championship run.
As a senior in 2015, she finished the year with 17 shutouts and 0.3 goals against average. Sullivan helped guide her club team, the Indy Premier Soccer club, to a pair of state championships. She also played for the Olympic Development Program in 2013 and 2014.
"Having a supportive and strong environment in the locker room is key and I am motivated to assist in the continued growth of the established culture," Sullivan said. "I am ready to get started and look forward to working with this talented Indiana team and dynamic group of goalkeepers."
Sullivan graduated in 2020 from Indiana State with a Bachelor's in communications and a coaching minor. She earned her Master of Arts in Public Relations with Sport Administration from Ball State in 2022.
