BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– As the days near closer to Indiana Football's week ten matchup against Wisconsin on Saturday (November 4), Indiana offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rod Carey, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri and select student-athletes addressed the media inside the Henke Hall of Champions.
Below is a partial transcript of the press conference, while video of the media sessions can be found on the right sidebar at IUHoosiers.com.
Rod Carey | Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
On the chance to increase the confidence of the receivers…
RC: We are going to find out what it does to their confidence for sure, now because there is video evidence. I would assume, knowing those guys, that it is going to do a lot of good for their confidence going forward. You have video evidence against a top-ten team. (Donovan McCulley) better score on that one. There has never been a more wide-open receiver in the history of football. (Omar Cooper) definitely ran a good route, made a good move, and got into the endzone. I think it's going to do a lot of good for them.
On trying to get Jaylin Lucas more touches and his overall mindset…
RC: Jaylin is a high priority for us to get him touches and he is also a high priority for the defense to make sure we don't get him touches. There is a little bit of a cat-and-mouse game going on where we are trying to be creative and get him touches, but at the same time, if the defense takes him away something else is there. That remains to be a high priority for us. That's not going to change. He's dynamic. He certainly hasn't been that the past two weeks because the touches are down. My job is to get his touches up. But you've also got to move the offense to win the game and score points. There's a lot of things that go into that but that's still a priority.
On the growth of the run game…
RC: We were all happy to get (Josh Henderson) back. He's played a lot of football around here. He was certainly a big part. Trent (Howland) obviously and (Christian Turner) has had some time this year too. You can't take the sack yardage out of it, but if you do, we're averaging about four yards a carry and that's effective running. It's not where it needs to be, none of it is. It's all below the line until you win, and then there's still some things that are still below the line when you do win. It's all below the line, but we've certainly being effective in the run game. The last two weeks it's been better, but still below the line.
Matt Guerrieri | Defensive Coordinator/Safeties
On the balance in preparation for schemes and certain players within the scheme…
MG: You just go back to what does the film show you. You try to dive into a system to understand it, and you also see who are the pieces of the system and what do they do best. Then you say, "How can those be highlighted and if they don't have a guy, how do things change from that standpoint." Coach Longo has done a really good job at a bunch of different places, and I have a lot of respect for him. It starts with his system from there. We study the personnel and what do they do best.
On Jordan Shaw…
MG: He's done a great job. It starts with the mentality he has. For any young guy to step up in a big spot, we had seen that develop over weeks and say that we need to get him inserted into this role. With Noah (Pierre) down, we made a decision to be able to put him into some slot corner type roles. He's got toughness to be able to blitz and you were able to see that. It starts with mentality. He has skills, but it's mentality.
On the play of Kobee Minor…
MG: He's done a good job. Coach Shelby has done a great job with him. He's a guy that has progressed when I first came here in the spring. I was able to see the talent that he had. He's gotten more comfortable in our system and has done a really good job.
