
Alonso-Corcelles Goes for 22 Kills to Beat Maryland

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles continued her strong run of form, supplying a match-high 22 kills to help lead the Indiana volleyball team (19-11, 9-8) to a 3-1 win (25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14) on Friday night at Wilkinson Hall.
Despite relinquishing a massive lead and dropping the second set, the Hoosiers buckled down in the final two sets, hitting .324 (16-5-34) in game four to polish off the season sweep of Maryland.
IU's primary pin hitters combined for 48 of IU's 59 kills with junior setter Camryn Haworth supplying 53 assists in just four sets, the most in a four-set match in her career.
The Hoosiers improve to 19-11 (9-8) on the season, awaiting a massive test against No. 3 Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at Wilkinson Hall. IU will honor five seniors following the match.

• After going for 24 kills on Sunday, Alonso-Corcelles followed up her career effort with an additional 22 kills on Friday vs. Maryland.
• She is the first IU player with back-to-back 20-kill matches since Amelia Anderson in 2015. Her 46 kills in back-to-back games are the most in consecutive matches since Breana Edwards went for 51 in a pair of matches in 2019.

• After a slow start on Friday, Gary was instrumental in a defensive turnaround, supplying 22 digs in just four sets. Her 497 digs this season are fourth most in a single season in program history.
• She now has 10 matches with 20+ digs, the most such occurrences in a single season in program history. With three matches to go, Gary is just 32 digs from breaking IU's single-season program record (525).

• The Hoosiers pulled away late in the first set, thanks in part to the prolific offensive play of Alonso-Corcelles, sophomore opposite hitter Avry Tatum and senior outside hitter Morgan Geddes.
• With the match tied at 13-all, IU went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 advantage late in the frame. Freshman libero Ramsey Gary went on a tremendous run of serve, including a service ace, to blow the set open.
• IU called timeout late in the set up three points and Geddes responded by putting away the final point of the set on a massive crosscourt swing.
