Rita Stephens Among Leanne Grotke Award Recipients

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's soccer alumna Rita Stephens was honored as the 2023 Leanne Grtoke recipient for her dedication to Indiana University and women's athletics.
The Leanne Grotke Award perpetuates the ideals Leanne Grotke Andreas embodied in her years serving Indiana University as a trailblazer and pioneer leader for women's athletics. This honor is bestowed on living persons whose service has made exceptionally outstanding contributions to IU's women's athletics program and is the highest honor of its kind given by the university.
Also receiving the award was former women's basketball player Jennifer Wilflong.
Stephens attended Indiana from 1975-1981 and was one of the co-founders of the IU women's soccer program in 1977 which started as a recreational club sport that was supported by former legendary head coach Jerry Yeagley. The women's soccer team was recognized as an official varsity sport in 1993.
