Maher Makes Scholar All-America First Team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana men's soccer senior defender Joey Maher was named a first-team Scholar All-American, United Soccer Coaches announced Friday (Dec. 15).
The 24 student-athletes selected to the two scholar All-America teams maintained a 3.40 cumulative grade-point average during their career, played 75 percent of games during the season of nomination, were elite players and met the highest standards of ethic and sportsmanship.
Maher is graduating from Indiana University on Friday with a degree in accounting having earned a 3.691 GPA. With one season of eligibility left, Maher will pursue professional opportunities via the MLS SuperDraft. During his time at IU, Maher was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Maher was a first-team All-Big Ten and first-team All-North Region selection in his senior season, captaining the Hoosiers to an Elite Eight appearance and nine clean sheets, which ranked tied for 10th nationally. He scored two goals and had one assist.
Indiana finished top-11 nationally in shutouts in all four seasons of Maher's career in which he appeared in 85 matches with 83 starts. In total, Maher helped IU keep 40 clean sheets and scored six goals. IU was 56-17-14 during his career, appeared in two NCAA College Cups and won four Big Ten Championships.
