2023 Volleyball Season Recap

Led by the play of an All-American setter, a standout freshman libero, two experienced middle blockers and a plethora of versatile players, the Indiana volleyball team had one of the best seasons in program history.

21 wins overall and 11 wins in the Big Ten paired with a fantastic season of fan support that featured multiple Wilkinson Hall attendance records brought new excitement the program hadn't seen in over a decade.

IU finished in a tie for sixth in the Big Ten, the program's highest finish since the conference expanded to 14 teams. An RPI that put the Hoosiers on the outskirts of the bubble ended the season after a strong regular season but left the door open for a future of fantastic volleyball in Bloomington.

Team Notes
The Hoosiers finished the season 21-12 (11-9), matching a program record for regular season wins (21) and finishing with the most conference wins (11) since 1999.

Led by the outstanding growth of junior setter Camryn Haworth, the Hoosiers turned into a dynamic offensive team with contributions from every part of the court. IU hit .237 on the season, the fourth-best team mark in program history.

Veteran middle blockers Kaley Rammelsberg (.365) and Savannah Kjolhede (.361) provided two of the most efficient offensive seasons in program history. Both players finished their IU careers as .300+ hitters while Rammelsberg received Second Team All-Big Ten honors.

Led by 73 aces from Haworth, IU was once again one of the most lethal teams in the nation from the service line. IU totaled 215 aces after going for 218 in 2022. The Hoosiers became the first Big Ten team under the current scoring system, since 2008, with back-to-back seasons of 200+ aces.

In the second-to-last game of the seasons, IU went for 14 aces in a four-set win over Michigan State, the most by a Hoosier team in the rally-scoring era. On eight occasions, IU went for 10+ aces in a single match including a run of three-straight contests in the regular season.

Kjolhede led the Hoosiers to an outstanding blocking season, producing 117 blocks while the team went for 303 total blocks including 15 in the final match of the year against Michigan. IU improved its total block output by 53 team blocks. An 18-block performance against Illinois, led by 12 from Kjolhede, was one of the best four-set block performances in the rally era.

Fan support for the program was reinvigorated by a fun and energetic team and a coaching staff that made an effort to connect to the community. Three of the four biggest crowds at Wilkinson Hall came in 2023 including a rowdy crowd of 2,725 fans that watched IU beat No. 15 Purdue for the first time since 2012.

Individual Notes
#10 Haworth, Camryn
One of the best all-around players in the nation, Haworth took her game to a new level in 2023. In her second season as the team's starting setter, she recorded 1,247 assists (Big Ten leader) and finished the season with 10.22 assists per set (No. 3 in Big Ten).

Lethal from the end line, Haworth totaled 73 service aces (Big Ten and NCAA leader). Her 73 aces are the most in a single season in program history since volleyball became a varsity sport in 1981.

She totaled 261 digs, 110 kills and 60 blocks on her way to earning unanimous First Team All-Big Ten honors. The three-time Big Ten Setter of the Week in 2023, Haworth also earned AVCA Northeast All-Region honors and became the program's fourth All-American.

#32 Gary, Ramsey
A unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman team selection, Gary turned in one of the best debut seasons in program history. The starting libero from day one, she broke both of IU's Single Season and Freshman Single Season digs records with 530 on the season.

She was the Big Ten leader in digs following the regular season and finished second among all freshmen in the NCAA in digs. She was third in the Big Ten in digs per set with 4.34 and became the first libero to ever earn All-Big Ten honors after being named to the second team.

Gary broke program records for 10+ dig games in a season (31) and 20+ dig games in a season (10) while helping to hold opponents to a .187 hitting percentage on the season.

#18 Rammelsberg, Kaley
Playing in her fifth and final collegiate season, Rammelsberg returned from injury in a big way in 2023. She hit .365 across 31 contests, the second best single-season mark in program history.

She finished second on the team with 281 kills. Among players that hit .350 or better in the conference, she had the most kills on the season. For her career, Rammelsberg finished with a .329 offensive clip; second best in program history to only Ashley Benson (2007-10).

Also a consistent blocking threat, Rammelsberg finished second on the team with 110 blocks. The Westerville, Ohio native went on to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors and was named AVCA Northeast All-Region Honorable Mention.

#15 Kjolhede, Savannah
Across four seasons for the Hoosiers, the Colleyville, Texas native played in 113 matches. She was available in the two she didn't play in as a healthy scratch.

She finished 10th in program history with 385 blocks including 117 in 2023. For her career, she was a .300 hitter which is tied for third all-time.

Kjolhede hit .361 in 2023, a top-five single season mark in IU history. Her .379 clip across 20 Big Ten matches was the best in program history for a single conference campaign.

#3 Alonso-Corcelles, Candela
The sophomore began playing as a six-rotation outside hitter at the beginning of conference play and slowly began developing into an elite player for the Hoosiers.

She ended the season on a streak of 16-straight matches with 10+ kills while averaging 3.34 kills per set in conference play. She went for a career-high 24 kills against Minnesota and followed it up with 22 kills the next match vs. Maryland.

Alonso-Corcelles had six double-doubles in Big Ten play, including a career-best 17 digs at Penn State, and tallied a career-best five aces at Michigan State in November.
