Indiana Basketball Game Notes – Game 9 vs. Auburn

Opening Tip
• Indiana University continues its 124th season of competition in men's basketball with a Saturday afternoon contest against Auburn as part of the Holiday Hoopsgiving. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Dec. 9 at the State Farm Center on ESPN2.
• Auburn (5-2) has bookended a five-game winning streak with a season-opening loss against No. 20 Baylor (88-82) and a true road loss against Appalachian State (69-64) their last time out.
• Junior center Johni Broome leads the Tigers in points per game (18.3), rebounds (9.1), and blocked shots (1.3). Freshman guard Aden Holloway is the only other Auburn player in double figures at 10.6 points per outing. He has hit a team-high 15 3-pointers.

• Indiana and Auburn have met just once on the hardwood. The Hoosiers emerged with a 107-90 victory over the Tigers in the second round of the 1987 NCAA Tournament. IU would go win the '87 title, the fifth in program history.
• The starting lineup for Indiana, led by Steve Alford (31 points) and Daryl Thomas (27), scored 105 of the team's 107 points. Keith Smart nearly recorded a triple-double with 20 points, 15 assists, and nine rebounds. Rick Calloway produced an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Hoosiers.
• IU holds a record of 68-50 against teams from the SEC.
Last Time Out
• Indiana stayed steady down the stretch to earn a 78-75 victory over Michigan on Dec. 5 at the Crisler Center.
• The Hoosier starting frontcourt of sophomore forward Malik Reneau (15), sophomore center Kel'el Ware (13), and freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako (11) combined to score 39 points on 16-of-27 shooting from the floor. They also ripped down 18 rebounds.
• Indiana received 28 bench points in the game, the most in a Big Ten Conference game since outpacing the Buckeyes, 29-17, on Jan. 28, 2023.
Indiana Ties to the Peach State
• Head coach Mike Woodson spent six seasons (2004-2010) as the head coach with the Atlanta Hawks. After taking over one of the youngest rosters in the NBA, Woodson went 100-64 in his last two seasons with two trips to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
• Associate head coach Yasir Rosemond was a standout guard at Douglass High School in Atlanta. He earned All-State honors each of final three seasons and helped lead the Astros to the semifinals of the 1993 Class 4A state tournament.
• Sophomore forward Kaleb Banks was named the 2022 Georgia Class 4A Player of the Year, was a 2,000-point scorer, and averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 boards per game during his senior season at Fayette County in Hampton.
• Freshman guard Jakai Newton averaged 14.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game during his junior season at Newton in Covington.
Paint Production
• Indiana averages 41.0 points per game in the paint and shoots 57.6% (189-of-328) from inside the arc. The Hoosiers hold opponents to 25.5 points per night in the key.
• IU scored a season-best 56 points in the paint against Wright State (Nov. 16). The Hoosiers also tallied 50 paint points against Harvard (Nov. 26).

Gunn, Bench Lead Indiana at Michigan
• Sophomore guard CJ Gunn produced a season-best eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc to go along with a career-high-tying three steals in a 78-75 win over Michigan on Dec. 5.
• The second unit provided 28 points in the game. Gunn and fifth-year senior Anthony Walker each tallied eight points, while junior forward Payton Sparks and sophomore forward Kaleb Banks scored six points each. The quartet added eight rebounds and five steals, collectively.
