AUSTIN, Texas – Despite only getting a pair of hits on Saturday (Feb. 25) against Texas at Disch-Falk Field, the Indiana baseball program had its chances to tie or take the lead twice in the late innings of a 5-2 setback.
An unearned run in the first inning got Texas (2-3) on the scoreboard first, before Indiana (2-3) pushed the equalizer across in the top of the fifth inning. The Longhorns, however, took advantage of a pair of Indiana errors to recapture the lead in the bottom the fifth. IU loaded the bases in the sixth inning but could only push one run across and that accounted for the final margin.
Senior Hunter Jessee pushed his reached base streak to 25 games with a sixth inning walk and eventually came around to score his team-leading sixth run of the season. Redshirt junior Bobby Whalen also walked and scored a run.
Sophomore Brock Tibbitts singled in the fifth inning and then drove in an RBI in the sixth on a fielder's choice, while sophomore Jorge De Goti singled in the ninth inning.
Sophomore Ryan Kraft (0-1) took the loss as he allowed four runs – two earned – on three hits over one inning, after junior starting pitcher Seti Manase allowed just one unearned run on one hit over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out one in the no decision.
The trio of redshirt-senior Craig Yoho, sophomore Luke Hayden and freshman Evan Whiteaker all threw scoreless innings to close out the game for Indiana. Yoho walked one and struck out one, while Hayden and Whiteaker both worked clean innings.
For Texas, Eric Kennedy had a base hit, reached on an error, and scored twice in the game. Garrett Guillemette had the lone multi-hit game with two hits, one of which was a double. Porter Brown had another successful afternoon at the plate with one hit, one runs scored and two RBIs.
Zane Morehouse (1-0) picked up the win with one run allowed on one hit over five innings. The starter walked two, hit three batters and struck out four in the outing. DJ Burke picked up the save with 2 2/3 innings of relief to close out the game. He allowed one hit and struck out three.
