Indiana vs. Iowa

MIKE WOODSON | HEAD COACH
On the message after tonight's game…
WOODSON: Not real happy, you know what I mean, we just we left our game in West Lafayette, you know, and it's just unacceptable the way we played tonight. You know, I apologize to our fans. You know, I'm the coach. I've got to get them ready to play, and that was a bullshit performance tonight.
On adjustments during game…
WOODSON: You saw -- you saw the game I did. They had their way doing everything they wanted to do.
On matching a team that hits threes…
WOODSON: How about playing some defense? That will help, which was nonexistent tonight.
On the preparation coming into tonight…
WOODSON: No, I thought we prepared, you know what I mean. They just competed, man. They came in here and kicked our ass. It was just that simple.
On defensive issues…
WOODSON: We haven't given up 47 points all year in a half. So I mean, nothing we did defensively that we worked on worked. We just -- we weren't there for some reason, and I've got to figure it out.
On moving on to Michigan…
WOODSON: Got to look at it. I never let a game no unnoticed. You have to look at it and learn from it. But got to go back to work. We have tomorrow off, and Thursday we'll get back to work.
On issues against Iowa…
WOODSON: You saw the same game I did tonight.
TRAYCE JACKSON DAVIS | SENIOR FORWARD
On what happened defensively…
JACKSON-DAVIS: Like, honestly we weren't into the ball. I feel like our nail and slot, just they weren't there tonight. Because I'm never supposed to -- I'm supposed to just be there, and I was switching a lot onto the guards, and usually that's the nail that takes that, and then he veers out if he's getting beat. And we just didn't have that.
It was just a full, just, meltdown of our defensive game plan. They exploited it and they took advantage of it and they hit shots, so credit to them.
On what you say after a performance like that…
JACKSON-DAVIS: Obviously everybody is upset after the game last weekend and coming back and doing this, it's not what we stand for. Everyone's upset. That's not much to be said. We just have to come in tomorrow and come in Thursday and work.
On the dip in play from Purdue to tonight…
JACKSON-DAVIS: I just I feel like it just was the defensive end of the floor. We scored 70 points almost, and they scored 90. I know last time we gave up more than 80; it's been a minute. But yeah they played up-tempo, they played fast and we tried to slow it down. We were playing at their pace, and they took advantage of it.
On the hangover following the Purdue game…
JACKSON-DAVIS: Yeah, you've just got to -- I don't really feel like there was really a hangover because we already beat Purdue once, and so we knew that we could do it again.
But at the same time, a game like this, you have to wash it out because we have got another game Sunday, and we've got to get ready for that and prepare for it.
So we've got to have a quick mentality, quick turnaround and get ready to work in practice.
On the defensive performance…
JACKSON-DAVIS: Yeah, this has been awhile since a team really dictated their tempo on offense, and they did that and that's a credit to them. They are obviously a great team, and they shoot the ball really well. And they came off a very emotional win against Michigan State, so they are kind of hot already. They came in and they shot lights out, we just never had a chance to respond and we never responded.
On the opening sequence…
JACKSON-DAVIS: I think we got Kris going a little bit. He got a wide open one. I think he got two open ones, actually, and when you get a guy like that going like that, his teammates feed off of that.
And so I feel like after Kris got going, a lot of other guys started hitting shots and then all chaos just breaks down, and then defensively we just broke down.
So I think that's the biggest thing that happened. I think we still got back into the game a little bit when it was like 20 -- maybe it was 21-24 but they were just already -- they were already comfortable and when a team like that that shoots the ball like that gets comfortable, it's hard to beat.
FRAN MCCAFFERY | IOWA HEAD COACH
Q. On the mental toughness of the team…
MCCAFFERY: I look at it like this, I've been coming down here a long time. I mean, I was at Notre Dame for 11 years. We haven't won too many times in here. I look at it like, if you sign up to play in this league, you want to play in this type of environment. That's what you've agreed to. That's what you've signed up for. And you have to want to compete against a really good team that's playing well. They have really established themselves since we played them the last time. Xavier Johnson just got hurt we tried to figure out is (Jalen) Hood-Shifino going to be the point guard, is (Trey) Galloway, and those two have really grown together, I think. Trayce (Jackson-Davis) is Trayce. He's one of the best players in the game right now. Get a healthy Race Thompson back, a veteran club with Miller Kopp. It's a hard team to score on. The fact that we outrebounded them I think says a lot about how we competed tonight. We only turned it over 10 times. But again, you go on the road and make 13 threes, that's hard to do. And we had a bunch of different guys making them. You make 13 threes, you've got a good shot to win.
Q. On what allowed for so many open looks for the offense…
MCCAFFERY: I thought him (Kris Murray) getting those two threes early was big, and they were close, but he was, like you said, a little penetration, and we're just running motion. Drive and kick, screen and cut and curl and back cut, move around and find people. We got some back cut layups throughout the whole game. We had some opportunities where Tony Perkins had space to drive it, but that's after we moved it. I thought our ball movement and our screening and cutting with a purpose was critical. I think if you don't, you're going to have a hard time scoring against this team.
Q. On the start of the second half…
MCCAFFERY: Very uncharacteristic start to the second half. Give them credit. We turned it over on the inbound, we got a little casual against the press, didn't come meet the ball and then we turned it over again on a deflection. They scored four straight points. We're up 11 so now it's seven, and that would have been an opportunity to panic and give the rest of the lead away. The fact that we were able to get it back over into double digits and then extend it from there is certainly what you want as a coach, but the guys showed incredible resiliency there and we got the stops we needed.
