BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – An eight-run third inning helped the Indiana baseball program to a series-clinching victory over Bellarmine, 13-3, on Saturday (March 11) at Bart Kaufman Field. All nine starters recorded hits in the game and six of them scored a run and drove in an RBI, while the pitching staff piled up 15 strikeouts in the contest.
Indiana (9-6) got off to the early start with two runs in the first and one in the second to stake an early 3-0 lead. Bellarmine (5-10) got a pair of runs back in the third inning, but IU piled up eight runs in the bottom half of the frame to take control of the contest. The Knights got one back in the fourth, but the Hoosiers capped the scoring with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Freshman Devin Taylor was on base in all five plate appearances, stole one base, drove in one RBI and scored four runs in a start. He went 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and two singles in the contest. Senior Phillip Glasser continued his torrid start to the season with a 5-for-6 afternoon at the plate, two runs scored and five RBIs. His career-high five hits included his second home run of the season and marked his 10th multi-hit game of the season through 15 games.
Redshirt junior Bobby Whalen chipped in two hits and walked, while sophomore Brock Tibbitts was on base four times with three hits and one walk. Senior Peter Serruto and sophomore Carter Mathison each posted two-RBI games.
On the mound, sophomore Luke Sinnard (3-0) struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed three runs on five hits over five innings of work to earn the win. Freshman Ethan Phillips tossed three scoreless innings in relief with three hits allowed, one walk and four strikeouts. Graduate student Wes Burton fanned two in a scoreless ninth inning.
Reed Blaszczyk hit a two-run home run for the Knights, while Will Aubel drove in one RBI and stole one base. Casey Sorg posted a multi-hit game with a pair of singles. Starting pitcher Drew Buhr allowed 11 runs – 10 earned – on 11 hits over two innings of work.
