BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A trio of Indiana baseball alums will pull on a Major League Baseball uniform to start the 2023 season on Thursday (March 30). The trio of Scott Effross, Tim Herrin and Kyle Schwarber will all begin the season on the 40-man roster for their respective organizations.
Schwarber enters his ninth season on an MLB roster in 2023 and second with the Philadelphia Phillies, while Effross starts his third MLB campaign and second as a member of the New York Yankees. A 29th-round pick by Cleveland in the 2018 MLB Draft, Herrin made the active roster for the Guardians out of spring training and looks to become the 34th Hoosier to appear in the big league uniform.
A two-time All-Star and World Series champion, Schwarber begins his ninth MLB season on Thursday against the Rangers. The 2022 Silver Slugger Award winner, he hit an NL-best 46 home run to join Ted Kluszewski and Ohio State's Frank Howard as the only Big Ten players to pace the National League or American League in home runs. Schwarber helped the Phillies to the World Series in 2022 with 94 RBIs, 100 runs scored and 21 doubles to go along with his home run total.
In the offseason, Schwarber participated in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and helped Team USA to a silver medal finish at the event. he hit two home runs and drove in four RBIs in five games played at the World Baseball Classic. Over his first eight MLB seasons, the left-handed hitter has 199 career home runs to rank No. 28 among active hitters entering the season.
Effross got the call up for his MLB debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2021 and appeared in 14 games down the stretch that season. In 2022, Effross made 47 appearances for the Cubs before he was traded to the New York Yankees. In 13 appearances with the Yankees, he posted four saves with 12 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings of work before having Tommy John surgery prior to the postseason.
After 118 minor league appearances, Herrin made the Guardians active roster out of Spring Training, where he made 11 appearances and owned a 1.20 WHIP. Of his 11 appearances leading up to the season, Herrin did not allow a run in eight of those, including his final five outings of Spring Training. He struck out 14, allowed 12 hits and walked just two batters to earn his spot on the Opening Day roster.
In all, 33 Hoosiers have appeared in Major League Baseball with five winning World Series titles and four have earned All-Star selections. Kluszewski (Cincinnati Reds, 1975 & 76 (coach)), Schwarber (Chicago Cubs, 2016), Mike Simon (Pittsburgh Pirates, 1909), Sam Travis (Boston Red Sox, 2018) and John Wehner (Florida Marlins (1997) have each been a part of World Series teams. Kluszewski (Cincinnati Reds, 1953-56), Schwarber (Boston Red Sox, 2021; Philadelphia Phillies, 2022), Pinky May (Philadelphia Phillies, 1940) and Mickey Morandini (Philadelphia Phillies, 1995).
