ROSEMONT, Ill. – A pair of top-11 national marks and a Big Ten lead in the discus earned sophomore thrower Jayden Ulrich weekly honors, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday (April 12) afternoon.
The East Alton, Ill. native was named the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week after throwing the NCAA No. 5 mark in the discus (59.29m/194-6) and the No. 11 mark in the shot put (17.06m/55-11.75) at the Triton Invitational in San Diego over the weekend.
After setting the school record in the discus last year, Ulrich improved upon the IU standard in the event with her throw of 59.29m/194-6. Her mark in the event is a Big Ten lead and the No. 5 mark in the nation.
To close out the weekend, she threw a season's best in the shot put of 17.06m/55-11.75 which is No. 11 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the Big Ten.
Ulrich is the only thrower in the nation with marks of 17+ meters in the shot put and 59+ meters in the discus. She has thrown over seven feet better than the next Big Ten athlete in the discus and trails the conference leader in the shot put by just three inches.
The IU sophomore was a Second Team All-American indoors in the shot put after finishing third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships this year. She was the conference's outdoor champion in the discus last May and has potential to score big points in both events for the Hoosiers.
This is the first weekly honor for Ulrich but the third-consecutive year (Khayla Dawson, 2021; Maddy Pollard, 2022) that an IU thrower has claimed the honor of Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.
