ROSEMONT, Ill. – A Big Ten and NCAA-leading time of 3:39.51 in the 1500 meters earned Indiana's Camden Marshall Big Ten weekly honors as announced by the conference office on Wednesday (April 5) afternoon.
Marshall was selected as the Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the first weekly honor from the conference in his career.
The Corydon, Ind. native ran the invite section of the 1500 meters at the Pepsi Florida Relays last Friday in Gainesville, clocking the fastest time in the nation this season.
An impressive kick down the final straightaway and a 55.4 split over the final 400 meters sent Marshall past his fellow collegians across the finish line.
He shaved nearly three seconds off his personal best and moved into seventh in program history in the event. He is one just two athletes in school history (Jim Spivey and Mark Deady) with top-10 school marks in both middle-distance events (800 meters and 1500 meters).
Marshall is coming off an impressive indoor season that saw him run 1:47.47 (800m) and 3:57.56 (mile) in the regular season before leading off IU's First Team All-American Distance Medley Relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
He has made all three finals he's contested in the 800 meters at the Big Ten Championships over the past two seasons and will be a threat to score in either the 800 meters or 1500 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington this May.
He joins Jake Gebhardt (XC and ITF) as Hoosiers to win Big Ten weekly honors this school year. Gebhardt and Marshall also lead the Big Ten in the 5000 meters and 1500 meters respectively this outdoor campaign.
Marshall is set to run the 800 meters this weekend at the Tennessee Invite in Knoxville before going back up to 1,500 meters at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invite in two weeks.
