BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IU's men's pole vaulters provided 15 points to open the team scoring on Friday at the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. The Hoosiers scored a 2-3 finish from Nathan Stone and Tyler Carrel with an eighth-place finish from Riley Johnston; putting three athletes on the podium.
Stone cleared at 5.44m/17-10.25 to take the lead late in the competition. Michigan State's Trevor Stephenson, the eventual Big Ten champion, moved the bar to 5.49m/18-0 where he cleared on his second attempt for the win.
Stone's silver medal was the fifth top-two finish at a Big Ten meet in his career while Carrel's bronze medal marked the highest finish of his career at the conference championships. Johnston's outdoor Big Ten debut resulted in a podium placing.
This marks the second-consecutive season that IU has scored 15 points in the men's pole vault after Stone and Carrel went 1-4 in 2022. Stone now owns six medals in seven Big Ten pole vault competitions during his college career.
Hope Purcell produced a day one lifetime best in the heptathlon, putting up 3289 points through the opening four events on Friday afternoon.
Competing in her first full heptathlon since the 2021 Big Ten Championships, Purcell sits in third in the overall standings behind Iowa's Tionna Tobias (3507) and Penn State's Maddie Pitts (3297).
She posted personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles (14.09) and the shot put (12.31m/40-4.75) with additional marks of 1.68m/5-6 in the high jump and 25.84 in the 200 meters to round out the first wave of scoring.
The Lancaster, Ohio native will conclude the seven-eventer tomorrow afternoon with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. She is also scheduled to contest the open long jump (Saturday) and the 4x100 relay (Sunday) in a busy weekend at the Big Ten Championships.
Maddie Dalton ran a lifetime best of 4:17.95 in the 1500 meters to earn a big Q to Sunday's final. She improves on her No. 7 time in school history and makes her first final at the outdoor conference meet.
Before the year, Dalton had never made a Big Ten final. She has now qualified to finals both indoors and outdoors this season at the Big Ten Championships after being an all-region performer in Cross Country.
