Kern Awarded Sixth B1G Weekly Honor of the Season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana freshman Taryn Kern earned her sixth Big Ten honor after she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third consecutive week, the league announced on Monday.
Kern hit .714 with five hits and two walks with six runs scored in the Hoosiers sixth conference sweep against Michigan State. She recorded three doubles while holding a 1.571 slugging percentage with a 2.371 OPS on the weekend.
She broke the single-season RBI record with an RBI double followed by her 22nd homer of the season in game two against the Spartans. Kern is tied for first in the NCAA for the most home runs on the season.
The San Jose, Calif., native leads the Big Ten in eight categories: slugging percentage (1.022), OBS (.605), OPS (1.627), RBI (67), home runs (22), runs scored (65), walks (41), and hit by pitch (20). She is also ranked third in batting average (.438).
Kern has reached base in 47 consecutive games and has 10 multi-RBI games on the season as the leader of Indiana's offense.

The Hoosiers head to the Big Ten Tournament where they will face the winner of No. 7 Penn State or No. 10 Michigan in the Quarterfinals on May 11 hosted at the University of Illinois' Eichelberger Field.
