2023 Season in Review
The Indiana track and field teams wrapped up the 2023 campaign at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas on June 9th.
A near-seven month season featured four Big Ten event titles, two men's and two women's, a quartet of First Team All-Americans on the distance medley relay, and a swan song for head coach Ron Helmer in his final year of coaching.
The Hoosiers' campaign featured a multitude of exciting performances and breakout seasons in our year-in-review.
Marshall's Breakout Year
The Corydon, Ind. native now owns top-three program marks in the mile (I) and 800 meters (I/O).
After bursting on to the scene as a freshman, Camden Marshall continued his upward trajectory by winning the Big Ten Outdoor title at 800 meters on his home track and producing some of the fastest times run in program history.
The sophomore ran marks of 1:47.47 (800m) 3:57.56 (mile) indoors while backing that up with impressive times outdoors of 1:46.57 (800m) and 3:39.51 (1500m).
On the track, Marshall also led off the school record distance medley relay team (9:22.16) in February and split 1:46.7 (No. 2 program history) in the 4x800 at the Penn Relays in February.
The First Team All-American in the DMR missed the national meet outdoors in the 800 meters by .11 seconds but has now made all four Big Ten finals in the event during his collegiate career while winning two of them.
School Records Smashed
Three school records, in NCAA contested events, were broken in 2023.
IU's men's distance medley relay team was the first to break a school record this season, taking down a one-year old mark with a time of 9:22.16 at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
The team of Marshall, Micah Camble, Parker Raymond and Jake Gebhardt combined to carry the stick around, breaking the previous record, set in 2022, by .62 seconds. The quartet, featuring Shaton Vaughn on the 400-meter leg, would earn fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
Jayden Ulrich improved upon her own school record in the discus at the Triton Invitational in April. She landed a mark of 59.29m/194-6, nearly eight feet further than the next best performer in program history.
Antonio Laidler's impressive 2023 campaign was capped off by grabbing hold of the program record in the 100 meters. He matched Rikkoi Brathwaite's mark of 10.20 (2022) at the Louisville Invitational in April before dropping the school record to 10.19 at the NCAA East Prelims in Jacksonville.
Long Jump History
Fernandez-Sola enjoyed a successful 2023 campaign.
Paola Fernandez-Sola proved to be one of the best long jumpers in the entire nation in 2023, landing some of the biggest marks in the country.
Her mark of 6.39m/20-11.75 at the Texas Tech Open in January was an indoor personal best and earned her a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She would match the same mark in Albuquerque where she made her first national final and finished ninth in the country.
She took her game to a new level outdoors, winning IU's first outdoor Big Ten title in the women's long jump since 2007 with a mark of 6.52m/21-4.75. The Puerto Rican would finish 15th in the NCAA outdoors to earn All-American honors.
Fernandez-Sola is the first woman in program history to earn All-American honors indoors and outdoors in the women's long jump in the same season. She is also the first women's long jumper to earn All-American honors outdoors in consecutive years.
Pole Vault Prowess
The Hoosiers piled up the points in the pole vault.
Nathan Stone won his fourth Big Ten title during the indoor season before leading a 15-point charge outdoors at the Big Ten Championships in the pole vault.
Behind Stone and Tyler Carrel, the Hoosiers went 2-3 on their home track to kick start the competition. Jessica Mercier scored both indoors and outdoors for IU, the only event the Hoosiers would get points from the men and women at both Big Ten meets.
Stone would finish as a Second Team All-American outdoors while Carrel made his debut appearance at the national meet.
Purcell Closes Career in Style
The fifth-year senior medaled in both multi competitions at the Big Ten meet.
In her final season at IU, Hope Purcell finally got her Big Ten title in the pentathlon. The Ohio native turned in an impressive 4109 points (No. 2 program history) tp grab IU's first win in the event at the Big Ten In 33 years.
Despite being far from healthy down the stretch, Purcell battled through seven events at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships to earn bronze in the heptathlon with a personal best of 5282 points.
