Opening Statement
TA: Just wanted to start by making a couple announcements. Ryan Miller has retired from football due to some medical situations. He's going to continue to be part of our program, awesome young man. Also, we voted for our captains which is always an exciting process. We had our players vote and coaches, as well. We have five captains for the 2023 season, they're going to be Noah Pierre, Aaron Casey, Mike Katic, Cam Camper and Andre Carter. Really excited to have those five guys representing our program in that role. Very well deserved. Guys that have come here and many have them been here for many years, six years for a couple of those guys. Then, also having Andre coming in here in January and earning the respect of his teammates by his work ethic and his performance during our practices in spring ball and all and the way he's worked. Really solid group of guys that have come here and done some great things. Cam Camper to me is just the picture of resilience, and grit and toughness. And Michael Katic just continues to improve and get better as he's been here and step into a role of leadership. You know how I feel about Aaron Casey, and what he's meant to our program, and Noah Pierre those two guys represented us at Big Ten Media Days. So, really, really awesome group of young men who I'm excited to lead our team.
On his thoughts after Saturday's Scrimmage…
TA: You go through, and you think about the depth chart and who's going to travel. That's kind of the big picture objective is that travel roster because that drives your special teams reps and guys who are going to be in that 74-man group. Who is going to be in the two-deep, who is going to be the next guy in beyond that per each position. I felt like that was a major goal going in. Also, had the objective of a lot of situational football, a lot of end of game situations that we worked through and just getting better. Tried to drive the ball and make it as game-like as possible, had an overtime period like we usually do in the second scrimmage, had a chance to go through that process and have the officials there and work through all that. Then also once again just work on two-minute, the kicking situation I thought was very, very positive, so that was a big improvement from the previous scrimmage and just the overall effort of our guys. So, very productive day, got a lot of reps, got a lot of snaps, went some live-gos which was good and as well as a lot of situations. So, I thought it was a very productive scrimmage.
On the quarterback battle…
TA: We have a decision, and no we're not going to announce it. I would say that the process that you go through, especially with two guys who are the same age and both young, both talented, both bring different skillsets to the team. Very pleased with those guys. I think they've just both really improved a lot since they've been there. Obviously, Tayven (Jackson) has been here for a shorter amount of time, but they've both worked extremely hard. I think even in the leadership role, I really challenged both of them and they've grown in those areas and are viewed in that regard. Two young men that we feel very, very good about that have great qualities. You're looking for a guy to be able to command that side of the football, lead that side of the football and that's with leadership and production. So, you've got to make plays and run the offense and just a verbalization of all that. When you don't huddle you have to be able to command and make checks and adjustments, and articulate things and all the different roles that go into that. So, you're looking for all those things from your guys. Obviously, you want them to be able to move the ball down the field in live situations and scrimmages and team-gos, and all that, we chart everything. I feel really good about the process we go through, and I feel like we've got two guys that we can win with.
On the value of more than one good option under center…
TA: I think the bottom line is that we do feel like we have two guys that are really good players. Excited about that. It's obviously a situation that you want to be in to be able to have more than one. Obviously, Dexter (Williams II) continues to work hard to rehab and get back and he got a lot of meaningful reps, as well. So, bottom line is we know we've got to be able to have multiple quarterbacks to help us win and do what we need to do in the 2023 season.
